I'd hazard a guess that the ability to install unsigned extensions has been extended. According to the info here, you can install unsigned extensions until version 46.
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Add-ons/Extension_Signing
I upgraded Firefox to version 44 today and my unsigned extensions still work. Not that I care much, I'm using Pale Moon 99% of the time now.
If you're married to Firefox though, apparently the release versions will eventually have the installing of unsigned extensions disabled, but the nightly and developer versions won't.
Edit: Yes, it appears allowing unsigned extensions was delayed until version 46.

No, part of your argument against using Chrome was a situation where Google didn't catch some adware-infected extensions.

Is there any way to disable HTML5 in preference for flash player in 44.* onwards (instead of using an add-on as there seems to be a delay loading the player when I use an add-on)?

Tried installing 48, but the override does nothing and Firefox seems to just ignore xpinstall.signatures.required - false. Installed 47 and that override works, so I'm sticking with 47 for now.

Along with the normal firefox 48, they also offer unbranded and nightly versions that still have the disable and keep up with the current version of firefox. Nightly is more so for developers and the unbranded is exactly the same as your normal firefox except that it does not display the name firefox or its logo and it offers the option to allow unsigned extensions.
Read their whole page below for more info and it also offers these special builds to download as well
