  1. I'm putting together a DVD in Premiere: a montage of multiple song clips, with simple transitions inbetween.

Trouble is, some of the clips are 720 wide, others are 704 wide.

I don't think there's any way to do this is there, without scaling one set of clips and losing quality?

You can pad 704 to 720 without resizing or crop 720 to 704.

    Yup.

  4. Or you can put all the 704 clips in one title set, and all the 720 clips in another.

That will squash the image very slightly, but not a bad idea, thanks.

I think you misunderstood pandy. 704->720 using pad does change the size from 704->720, but it is not "resizing" in the usual sense of resampling.
But NO it will NOT squash the image, unless the hardware is doing something off (which you can't completely guard against).

I didn't mean it will resample it, I meant that the image will look distorted (not much, but a little). Is that correct?

Is that the proper term, "padding"? All these years and I never knew that. I've heard of pads in music though.

Yes, padding is just the exact opposite of cropping/trimming. (Pads in music are totally unrelated which I'm sure you knew.)

Actually, the padding is the result of flattening to the background. A reverse crop would result in a resize.

Its a composite between two layers.

Not to mince hairs, but the devil IS in the details. hahaha.

@budwzr, it doesn't have to be a composite, nor multiple layers. Think of this analogy in the photo world: Change Canvas Size in Photoshop. Can easily work with just one element and one layer, but it can pad (aka apply "padding" or "cushioning" to) the surrounding edge.
But it doesn't affect in the least the quality of the original active picture area, nor does it change the active area's Aspect Ratio (though it might change the overall resolution and AR, and that might affect how a decoder/player treats it and thus the active picture area).

    @Scott, yeah, yeah, no disagreement.

The tools in PS don't all translate into video editing. I don't think the NLE's can handle elements without a layer.

EDIT: Oh, I get it. Padding is Adobe nomenclature?

  13. When I said padding's the opposite of cropping, I meant theoretically. I wasn't talking about software-specific functions.
