Hello,
I have an .mp2 file. It's a video file that I captured from a VCR. Is it mpeg-2? I need to open this file in TMPGEnc or I need to convert it to a format I can recognize.
On one of my computers (The computer I used to capture the video) I CAN open this file in TMPGEnc. However my conversion is taking 52 hours as it is a slow computer. The faster computer of mine cannot recognize this file format. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Uh, mp2 is an audio file, so converting wont do any good. mp2 is kind of like mp3. ayway, mp2 is basically the format of the AUDIO that is used in VCD's, so ur file has no video. Therefore TMPGENC is utterly and totally useless for it/

Yea thats what I thought. I used an ATI All-In-Wonder 128 to capture the video. And believe it or not it saved the video completely in an .mp2 file. The only program I can open this "video" .mp2 is with a fileplayer that came with the ATI video card. I fully checked everywhere to see if there was another file that the video was in and there is not. I have "TheProfessional.mp2" Size: 830 meg.
It opens in the ATi file player, video and all... -
Just try to rename the .mp2 to .mpg. TMPG probably can not handle that extention. Also get the MPEG-2 VFAPI plugin
http://e3lt11.ocv.ne.jp/mpeg2/
Copy it to the TMPG directory. Then start TMPG, go to options > enviromental settings > VFAPI plugins and increase the priority of m2v.vfp. Then you should be able to load a MPEG-2 file as video source. -
I tried the VFAPI plug-in and I still couldnt open the .mp2 file. I tried renaming it to .mpg and still no go. What the hell is a .mp2 video file anyways?? Is there an external freeware program available for converting .mp2 video files into .avi, or .mpg ...etc. Thx for the much appreciated help.

Search for "mp2 ATI all in wonder". Hope you will find the answer. -
Okay, I got the mpeg-2 codec from stinky's website specifically for the ATI:AIW .mp2 codec. However I cannot get the codec to show under the VFAPI plug-in screen in TMPGEnc. It should show up after I install the mpeg2 codec..yes? Cant seem to get it to work...

I would try capturing again, changing some setting, because an MP2 is an audio file, you cant convert it into video, you can convert it to MPG in TMPGEnc, however when you play it in media player, it will just show black screen and play the MP2 Audio

OK, there are a few bits of flat-out incorrect information in this thread concerning the .mp2 extension (it isn't an audio file, in this case, although the mp2 extension is usually used to indicate layer-2 audio - just not in this case). Let's clear that up right now:
*.mp2
The .mp2 extension is used (with questionable wisdom) by the ATI Multimedia Center "Digital VCR" in order to clearly denote that the captured video file is conventional MPEG-2. You can just manually change the extension to .mpg if you wish. It is plain old MPEG-2 video.
*.mpg
For MPEG-1 files, ATI MMC just uses the conventional .mpg extension. Nothing new here.
*.vcr
There is also the proprietary ATI VCR format, for which MMC uses the .vcr extension (and includes switchable "closed captions", by the way, great for TV recording). Files recorded in the ATI VCR format and can be easily converted to MPEG-2 (but you lose the switchable captions, sorry) from within MMC's File Library. You must use ATI's "File Library" for the conversion (right-click on the file, you'll see the option), because the .vcr files are proprietary format until converted. As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
nemesys777,
MP2 is just an file extension. I have the ATI All In Wonder 128 Pro 32 Mb video card and ALL my MPEG2 VIDEO from TV/VCR recordings are saved with that extension. You may need an older version of TMPGEnc to open the file. I have an older "12" something, I think (can find out if you need the version number), on my machine at home and it works fine. The NEW one however will not open the same file. NOTE: I have both on the same machine. Open TMPGEnc and from the FILE menu use the "MPEG TOOLS" Go to the "De-Multiplex" tab and open your MP2 file. It should show you the Audio and VIDEO streams in the file. This will confirm that it does in fact have a video stream. It will also show you the basic stream information, frame size and such.
What type of disc are you trying to make, VCD, SVCD ect? You may be able to Capture in a format that won't take as much processing. If you are going to VCD you might try just recording in VCD. I know I've been tweeking my setup and I can record Directly to VCD and have it look as good as some of the processes that take WAY longer. How about from 2.5 to 3 hours for 22min video (rerendering from another format) to 45 seconds (no rendering, just a data stream copy). There really isn't just "ONE REALLY COOL WAY" to do this video stuff. What hardware and drivers and applications you have installed all make a difference.
Hope things work out for you, the learning cliff can be steap but once you get a process down it's great. -
Well I found out about the ATI exclusive .mp2 video format. What I was trying to do was move the .mp2 video file to another machine, so I could use TMPGEnc. I tried to get the .mp2 file to be recognized on the non ATI machine, but I havent had any luck. They tell me that a non-ATI computer cannot about the .mp2 format. I think I will either have to re-capture, or just let the ATI machine render the movie (Which currently is at 43 hours 18 mins..
) Thanks for all the help. I thought I was losing my mind when I saw the video .mp2 format. What the hell were they thinking???!!
"HEY GUYS, I have a great idea......lets make a new file format that has nothing to do with audio....yea....and lets call it..... a .WAV file!!!" -
