  1. Anyone know how to keep icons from "auto aligning left" ONLY when HDMI is connected. Stays in desired spots with "align to grid" checked, that's all. It aligns left when screen is closed. It is set to extended display. When disconnected no problems occur when screen is closed. Is their a solution? I want to always leave my hdmi plugged in.

  2. Clone rather than extend, or, attach, align icons, and do not remove.

Extended display is essentially changing screen resolution, this will force an icon re-alignment.

  3. What do you mean by attach? Yes the clone/extend I thought was the issue, I just changed it so I could use the internet while on a tv display for a movie. Do you think Extended gives a better audio/video than Clone does, or is it not a possible factor? I did notice a quality increase in both on extended, but it may be in my head. I switched it back to Clone and then made sure "align to grid' was unchecked/rechecked, should not make a difference, and when I reopened the screen they aligned left and did not hold the specific locations I put the icons.

Auto arrange makes a difference, align to grid would just move them a line or two.

One more problem with using smart tv for internet instead of pc or tablet
People use a smart tv, so they can set in the couch and look at internet on a big screen
I would much rather use my pc or my tablet, just like right now

Smart Tv is for unintelligent people. Hdmi to receiver to pc, very smart. I can just set a screen saver, temporary problem solved. Still interested to know how to shut screen and retain icons in same space?

I use my tv with my laptop several times a week, I have a screen fill of icons nothing moves
But my laptop is 17" 1920 res
So maybe that is the difference

  7. Possibly but I don't think mine is that much different 15" 1920. Do you have icons out of alignment, and they stay still, when you reopen the screen? My screen when closed is set to "do nothing", however it still does something when you shut it. My icons are personalized and have also altered the reg. for no arrows, do you think that causes a problem?

    Hum
    My icons are Windows stock
And I do have grid alignment turned on, although I have moved them around and have some on each side of the screen, the majority are on the left, a few on the right a few string across the top
A new file or program icon will automatically take the first open space on the left side
But they do not move when I use the hdmi, plug unplug.. Or open shut the lid, mine also stays powered on, only the screen goes dark when I shut the lid, my icons don't move, not a quiver

If your resolution changes, Windows HAS to recalc/reset the icons. Otherwise there could be icons accidentally off the screen. What you're doing sounds like it could be (even at least temporarily) changing the rez.

That's probably why it isn't affected when in clone mode.

    extended display
meaning both screens are one large continious display, scroll off of one an on to the other ?

yeah that is problem, its switching resolution, and when close it and the display blanks, but the TV is still connected the res changes to one screen only then back to double width when you open up.

same result when turnin the tv off/on, changes from (1) width, too double width

    yep thats your problem

Like I said the icons move after screen shut in Clone mode too. I do have my settings for my screen at 150%, rather than recommended 125%. The only other factor is to me the altering of the icons, that can't be so b/c it only occurs with HDMI connected. I also restarted the pc before and after switch to Clone mode. There are 3 icons on the tv (extended display), sometimes they would align left to the tv and other times all align left on just pc. That may be b/c when tv is not being used for that source of hdmi, it switches back to single display on pc until tv source is active. I did leave the screen saver on and they stayed in place. Still will need to restart, close lid, and power down obviously and would want to retain icon placement?

  12. By attach I mean connect the TV, keep it active, if inactive, resolution changes.

Extend or clone has nothing to do with video quality, per se, but both can force a resolution change and that DOES affect quality.

Anytime you change resolution icons will re-arrange. Connect or disconnect or de-activate one of the monitors, resolution will change. Laptop may not activate external display immediately on bootup.

I leave my hdmi plugged in. Do you mean b/c my tv is not active display of display mode (extend or clone) that they are moving, when screen is shut? Usually don't boot up or restart that often, just mainly close the screen.

Icons moved again after receiver was shut off. The screen on pc does flicker when receiver is turned on/off. This time icons on pc aligned left and icons on tv (extended) aligned left (which is next to right side of pc).

ON another note does anyone know how to get Comcast signal in video box on standby not to send a signal at all? This way my receiver's auto shut off would work? It's the only source the "auto-shut off" does not work with.
