My video editing specific machine has been off the internet since it was built.
I just bought the Pro version of VOB2MPG and I need this program on that machine.
I really don't want to hook it to the internet - even temporarily because it will probably start updates that will cause issues.
This machine has been stable for 6 years and I want to keep it that way.
    Thanks

Not sure but don't you just get an email with the serial no. Someone else might confirm if it does 'call home' when entering that etc.

XP ?. Updates for that stopped many months ago.

^^ Like I already said, the OP is using XP (it's even in the topic header).

Even if updates were on auto, there would not be any.

Even so, it's another level of 'protection' against these 'nasty' updates

If I did not have Automatic Updates turned OFF...these would have been downloaded and installed......right?

Microshaft does work in a mysterious way.

Was it not early this year that they announced that they would no longer be supporting XP ?

But then those updates might be common to all OS's

I also have turned off updates in Win7 but IIRC there are several ways to configure updates. Turn off, Download AND Install automatically, Download but only prompt for installation. There may be others as well.

If you do a clean, fresh install of XP and go through all of the motions.....(my guess is) you will still have the previous updates bugging you to download. No longer being supported doesn't necessarily mean that that the updates before the plug was pulled have disappeared.
