  1. I have a bunch of TV recordings that I want to put on DVD to give to my friend. (They're MPEG2 .ts files, 544x576, 25fps)

I want to trim them down losslessly to remove the ends, so I've been using Avidemux.

Some of the trimmed videos work just fine, while others don't work: the video seems to slow down and quickly goes out of synch with the audio.

It has occurred to me that all TV recordings these came from a satellite dish, and the signal was not always 100%. On rare occasions there were "glitches" on screen. Could this explain why there are errors in trimming? (The original recordings all play absolutely fine with no errors.)

Could anyone advise please? Is there other free software other than Avidemux which can trim losslessly?

I was going to suggest video redo, but it's not free
It has a steam fix mode for this type of problem,
Fix the steam, then edit the fixed stream
Since your using avidemux, try video stream copy while recoding the audio to a different format
    Then edit That file

  3. TSMuxer will open and remux TS files and has a trimming function.

MKVMergeGUI will do likewise and it'll open TS files, although the output will be MKV.

Neither have a preview because they're not designed for editing as such, but they should be able to remux and split/trim without messing with the audio sync.

If ultimately you want to re-encode, eac3to might be worth a shot if you have problems. It can be used to extract the video and audio streams and it'll try to fix any problems it finds in the process (audio gaps etc). The extracted video and audio can then be remuxed together with programs such as TSMuxer or MKVMergeGUI. The HdBrStreamExtractor is a fairly easy to use GUI for eac3to. The most recent version can be found here, or it's built into MeGUI and can be found under MeGUI's Tools menu.

  4. Thank you both for the suggestions.

'Hello', that's a lot of information, but very excellent information, thank you so much. I do want to re-encode for DVD so I need to sort out the problems in those files, so I am definitely going to try MeGUI. Thank you!
