Have a video which is very bright and has low contrast which makes for bad quality viewing.
Is there an editing program (hopefully basic as some editing progs are very complicated for novices) to fix that kind of problem?

You could try changing the video settings in VLC, MPC-HC, or whatever your computer player is. Or you could try and change the settings of your TV for better viewing.
But as far as re-encoding the video with better contrast and brightness, I don't know of any easy programs. Most of the easy programs don't let you mess with the color. Only thing I can think of is Tweak() in the Avisynth, which can be difficult for newbies. MeGui or AvsPmod are good GUIs for Avisynth. -
Avidemux always seemed to mess with my colors back when I was a novice, so I stopped using it. Virtualdub would be a better option.
