  1. Ever since I upgraded from Windows 7 a few days ago, Handbrake will not open. It instantly crashes and the Event Viewer points to some issue with d3d9.dll. I've tried looking around online but haven't found anything to help. I did uninstall Handbrake and then reinstall it.

Hmm... The upgrade might have done something to your DirectX setup (d3d9.dll is a part of DirectX). Normally, I'd suggest downloading the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, have it check your DirectX setup and install or upgrade any necessary components. (At least since Vista, Windows has shipped with a minimal installation of the DirectX 9 components, and the upgrade might have 'reset' some of them, somehow.)

...but since I'm on a Linux system at the moment, I can't make sure the program still works, or the link is still valid, as Microsoft's site keeps redirecting me to try to get me to download the Windows 10 ISO.

I tried that and it did nothing. Says I have a newer or equivalent. I'm wondering if I need to uninstall and then reinstall DirectX or just DirectX 9. Though looking around the net I don't think I can.

Try XmediaRecode. It's a portable front end gui for ffmpeg.

I guess they haven't updated it for Win10, then. I still suspect either the upgrade did something to the DirectX setup (overwrote components, like the DX9 DLLs, with the 'minimal' versions, for example), or there's a conflict between the components somewhere.

Yeah, they probably don't allow for an uninstall > reinstall in this case. And all of the DirectX installers predate Win10, I'm sure, and will likely have the same problem as the web installer.
I'd check to see if there's an updated DX installer (for Win10), but... well, Microsoft. (If they do have an updated installer, maybe they've rolled the diagnostics of the web installer into it.)

  8. Try follow steps from HandBrake SupportFAQ:

    HandBrake crashes or won't launch.
1.Reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0, see Where can I download the Microsoft .NET framework 4.0?

2.Uninstall HandBrake. There is a shortcut for this in the start menu group.

3.Delete the HandBrake config file directories:

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\HandBrake
    and

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\HandBrake

4.Clear your system temp folders by using the "Disk Cleanup" tool that ships with Windows.

5.Re download HandBrake from the handbrake.fr website, and install it.

DirectX updates are now handled by Windows Update.

Thanks. I'll give that I try when I can.

  10. Tried to follow the FAQ and it didn't work. Doesn't seem I can uninstall .NET framework 4.0 to reinstall but I did everything else.

Update: I found a solution. I was running MSI Afterburner and read elsewhere to try closing. It worked.
