  1. Having some problems editing an MP4 file. I am using avidemux for editing, although the file
loads okay and plays no problems, the editing cursor stays in the same place at the front of the
video and cannot be moved, so I can not move it to any point for cutting.

After downloading the file noticed on my file explorer that whereas normal vidoes display a
thumbnail, this only shows the logo of the media player, this usually spells trouble !
So I can only assume the file is corrupted in some way, although it plays okay, just cannot be
edited, so guess I am stuck with it unless someone has some suggestions how to solve it?

Did notice the video had rather a high frame rate like 50 fps, whereas normally most videos have
between 25 and 30 fps, do not know if that has anything to do with it, not being an expert on
    these matters?
At one stage avidemux when trying to move cursor displayed "Cannot go to next keyframe" message)

Also noted Size displayed on File Explorer is 1009 MB but on Vid details below at bottom it says :Stream size : 977 MiB (97%)
Does that mean some small parts are missing, which I guess would explain the problems?

    Mmmmh, confusion reigns

  3. [QUOTE=roma_turok;2422415]Its not MP4 its AVI

mhh weird,.... in file explorer says its an .mp4, not avi..
well I am pretty much novice in this field so guess there is some reason for that, which computer morons like Moi can not figure out

Well downloaded the prog you suggested.
Wow !!! what a handful...looks terribly complicated for a novice.

But on the plus side the vid does play and timeline responds.

But as I said complicated cant see a simple cut function as on avidemux, etc so will have to try and figure out whats what... probably causing severe mental trauma, so better book an appointment with Mental Health Dept

That's because it IS an AVI. AVI and MP$ are container types that can have any number of audio and video streams, in this case you have an avc stream encapsulated in an AVI container.

Some people, evidently like Roma, think that an avc stream can only exist within an MP4 container.

He thought no such thing. He was only commenting on the container and not the audio or video within.

  6. well think I found an acceptable solution.
Tried out the program aviutl suggested by Roma. Well,It's a very comprehensive programme and I
am sure it would do a very good job.
However it is far too complicated with virtually dozens of options and you need to be pretty
clued up on editing, for a novice it's a nightmare.
Plus the UI is an absolute disaster, virtually no buttons, every time you do anything you have
to click 2-3 times on the menu to access anything.

So came across another program SMM Avi Trimmer. which works just as well, giving good results
and is far simpler to use.
Been using it this morning and managed to get all the files which didn't work before
    done, so pleased about that.
Actually on reflection as I only wanted to cut out certain segments of vid probably would have
been better going for a video splitter in the first place instead of an editor.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the advice given.

Are you saying aviutl is not so good?

Reread the OP's question and attached mediainfo shot, then reread roma's answer, then...

How does that explain why it shows up as an MP4 in Explorer? Because it's an AVI??

Mind you it probably is an AVI. MediaInfo doesn't seem to care about the file extension. So a file called test.avi renamed to test.mp4 will look like this:

    Complete name : E:\test.mp4
    Format : AVI
    Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
    File size : 34.5 MiB
    Duration : 3mn 49s
    Overall bit rate : 1 261 Kbps
    Writing application : VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178/release)
Writing library : VirtualDubMod build 2178/release

Still an AVI, but with an incorrect MP4 extension. Unfortunately ro2124 omitted the first line otherwise it'd be clear if that's what's happened.

If it is, I'd try changing the extension to avi and then opening it with avidemux for editing. It might make a difference. I don't know. Or you could try editing with VirtualDub. Mind you I don't know how accurately either will navigate through avc video with 16 ReFrames.

If it is an AVI, an alternative might be to rename it with an AVI extension and remux as an MP4. MyMP4BoxGUI should do it and avidemux might be able to navigate more successfully.

Well did not say that, probably is very good if you want to learn dozen if not hundreds of options. For me far too time consuming.
As I said found another prog much simpler which did the trick for what I wanted to do , SMM Avi Trimmer
