For some odd reason, I find that any (animated/telecined) video captured through my capture card (a run of the mill iGrabber) is strangely unreceptive to being detelecined in Handbrake, while video captured with a DVD Recorder detelecines just fine. Both are encoding at 640x480/720x480 at 29.97FPS (albeit one in H264 and the other in MPEG-2), why does one work when the other doesn't? Strangely, both can be deinterlaced, but I'd rather not lose quality and waste time.

Maybe it's being confused by the fact that your interlaced video is encoded progressive. That has also messed up the chroma channels. You need to make your capture device encode interlaced.

Huh, that's interesting. Is there some way to force it to encode/interpret interlaced instead of progressive?

I have no idea. I don't know anything about the iGrabber. Is the AVC encoding done by the device or by the capture software? If the latter you can probably force it to encode interlaced.

Another quick question: What are the "custom" parameters for Detelecine and Decomb/Deinterlace? What do they do and what do I enter in them?

I'm actually only encoding twice-Once from the VCR to the recorder (either the DVD recorder or the capture card) and then from the resulting video (either MPEG or MOV) to MKV.

Something like this, although it's old and probably outdated. Maybe Google "Mencoder de-interlacing" or "Mencoder command line".
