Ever since I installed MPEG Streamclip, I've found it nearly unusable due to an almost borked video player. The cursor and volume controls are oddly shifted over, a good chunk of the first frame will stick while the rest of the video plays, and the video will sometimes devolve into a complete mess. Strangely, this doesn't affect anything exported, but it makes it utterly useless for finding and/or clipping videos (which is about 95% of the reason why I downloaded it in the first place).

Did I just get a bad download, or is there something wrong with the current version of Quicktime 10.4?

  2. Two thoughts:

    1. You should be using Quicktime 7.x not the latest Quicktime X -- confirm this.
    2. Since this is an 11 year old program that hasn't been updated in three years, it may simply not be compatible with the latest OS and/or video drivers.

Well that....makes a lot more sense now. Are there any decent up-to-date alternatives out there?

    No.

But I cut mp4s lossless(no reconversion) with avidemux. If it crashes try an older version. You could also cut with Xmedia Recode, Video to Video Converter, Free Video Editor (ADWARE) .

Or edit with the free Windows live movie maker. It will reconvert all video though.

Or try a good commercial mp4 cutter like Videoredo or Solveigmm Video Splitter.

Okey. You seem to be a mac user....then use iMovie or Final Cut Pro.

iMovie just seems to handholding for my purposes, and FCP is too overkill, especially considering I already have Premiere Pro for advanced editing purposes.

  7. If you have Premiere, for goodness sakes use Premiere. There's no rule that says you have to use all the advanced features for every project.

For in-depth editing and assembly (ie: montages and remixes), Premiere is utterly brilliant. However, if I just need a quick screenie or just need to slice off the first 5 seconds of a video, it just seems like a hassle. It's like getting groceries in a bespoke tux or daily-driving a Maserati. Yes, you theoretically can do it, but it's impractical as all hell (although using Premiere won't make you look like an absolute tool )

    To each his own.

But really, dragging a clip into Premiere, dragging it to the new sequence icon, finding my cut points, trimming, and exporting is no more complicated than doing the same thing in VirtualDub or AviDemux or even Mpegstreamclip.
