I agree. I DON'T download movies on principal. You do download movies because you really don't care about anything.
So we're agreed. Only people who care about things care for things.
Everyone else just over-simplifies and tries to make out that over-simplifying makes them clever.

http://lifehacker.com/how-long-your-hard-drive-is-likely-to-last-1462918832
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/170748-how-long-do-hard-drives-actually-live-for
They found that hard drives have three distinct failure rates: in the first year and a half, drives fail at 5.1% per year; in the next year and a half, drives fail less—at about 1.4% per year; but after three years, failure rates skyrocket to 11.8% per year.
The good news is, 80% of hard drives last at least four years. The bad news is 20% of them don't. Backblaze doesn't have data beyond the four years measured so far, but extrapolated the data to predict a median lifespan of over 6 years for most hard drives.
I have ten at the moment, I've had them for over two years now. One out of ten has died. -
You go off on that stupid tanget about "Joe" (who, BTW, can be completely ignored because he probably has never sold ANY of those $40k cables, assuming this isn't a goof anyway), you jump from asking about storage that "lasts a lifetime" to trying to TELL US that it doesn't last a lifetime (when we've already been trying to explain that to you from the very beginning). Then, you blab on and on about how you succeeded in mistreating your equipment and yet it has still lasted - as if that anecdote now proves that things last, which clear statistical evidence shows that it doesn't. All your stint really told you (whether you were listening, or NOT), was that you temporarily beat the odds.
You know what they say to gamblers who are temporarily beating the odds? "Quit while you're ahead". In this instance, stop trying to fool yourself into believing that you only need to choose a few external 10TB boxes and you'll be set for life. Not going to happen that way, unless your life were to be prematurely shortened.
If you read that article correctly, you would understand that for those who have unique data on their drives (meaning it's not fault-tolerant, nor backed up, nor archived), if they go south it is a VERY expensive proposition, which STILL isn't guaranteed to get the data back.
Of course, EVERY user who cares about data retention should have a valid & working backup & archive strategy. That ought to go without saying (but somehow it still needs to be said). What was said about RAID & ZFS referred more to the ability to continue in a "working" condition, with minimal to NO downtime, even when there is a faulty drive (though during rebuilds, there is reduced performance due to the additional rebuild process activity). If you don't want/need that kind of Always-Online performance, just ignore those suggestions and get what you need from the other suggestions, but you shouldn't discount them - we DO know what we're talking about. We HAVE seen firsthand drives die permanently (some even not backed up, I'm sad to say). We do pay attention to the industry, and we have tested multiple storage scenarios.
If all you're using your storage for is DL'd movies in a NAS, put a couple of fast & big drives in a Linux box and make it your mediaserver. DONE. Don't presume to understand what "the real world" needs, however. LOTS of people work with audio/video and need the performance necessary to get the job done right. LOTS MORE don't work in media, but they still have precious home/family memories that should never get to a point of unrecoverability. It's never a good idea to "put all your eggs in one basket". And restoring backups means a lot of downtime. Maybe for them that is unacceptable.
BTW, the word is supposed to be spelled "asinine"...
Scott -
What could anyone need all that storage for other than movies? Are you NSA? "The real world, Everyone, Lots of people". Precious home/family? Are you storing their DNA makeup? You don't dl movies on principle? What principle is that? They are leaked by the studios who own them to begin with. Or do DVDs screeners, just sort of do it on their own? By your statistics if one dies b/c that's life than all could die at the same time. Why do people back up Dvd's? I appreCIAte the spelling lesson. "A fool and their money are soon parted". I did read the article. It said most of the time, it's recoverable. The only difference between my expense and yours is you do it to prevent when more like the rare occasion happens, and mine will be if and when.
Btw Mr. Omniscient, how do you know what Joe has sold?
When did I say these DONT last a lifetime? My initial question was referring to never running out of space, not that stuff breaks. Yep I beat the odds that why in a room full of of 10 people. 3 are smart, 3 are dumb, 3 don't care and 1 is intelligent enough to lead the rest. People like you are smart and work for people like Cisco so they can memorize useless data. I work for those mentioned who realize when you step out of your Linux box, anything is possible?Last edited by mlmiller707; 30th Nov 2015 at 04:53.

Now I have to put a couple in a Linux box? What's wrong with the one 8tb and connect it usb when I want a movie? Who uses Linux? Oh I know about next to no one. Only dorks like you who talk about assumptions/ presumptions just to do it yourself. Why didn't Apple spell ascenine right? You and your expert team, are far from the majority of the world. Nobody ever said you don't know? You just care way too much about what I still don't know. So please do tell what is exactly on your Zettabyte home storage system?

Blu ray rips, with chapters carefully positioned on exactly the right frame, audio compressed with FFMPEG into FLAC at settings that can take 5 times longer than the movie itself to complete. All the subtitles and audio tracks properly named, with a list of participants for each of the commentary tracks.
DVDs carefully processed with AVISynth scripts, step by step, to fix any problems the video might have, then encoded with x264 at "very slow" settings.
Hundreds of video files carefully tweaked to their optimum, work that would take months or years to do over again.
Try to be aware that this is a site for people who care about video, if you want a site for people who don't care about things, maybe google will help you find somewhere. -
Please don't waste anyone's time with spelling/grammar/typo bullshit. That just tells
me you are a needing a nice bitch slap. -

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
All you have to do is BELIEVE hard enough the movie will be still there when you want it. And if it's not, go out and find s/o who is able to recover it, and if he's not, wave bye-bye to 8TB of data, get another drive and start downloading all over again. Life can be as simple as that... -
You are more drama than a 13 year old girl who just got her first period. Sure buddy. Jesus will be back before the data just up and vanishes.
As far as life, you desperately need one. You are going to die eventually like your hdd's. Hop off the computer, and stop trying to convince the world you are not the biggest supplier of ripped BR to the pirate industry. We know who you are. Langley told me I was one of the most intelligent people on the planet, since when do they ever tell the truth?Last edited by mlmiller707; 30th Nov 2015 at 05:27.

I'm pretty sure you don't belong here.
Just go out, buy a drive, and if something goes wrong, blame the drive.
You can be the hero in your own world. -

You are correct sir. Your world is mine.

I just wasted the last month fiddling with the Sourcecode in MediaInfo. I added support for Atmos, the Matroska Statistics Tags, corrected the matroska frame rate detection bugs and added support for various M4V iTunes atoms. Other than that I've reported yet another bug in MKVToolNix, which was fixed and one in GPAC (MP4Box). It's chicken feed compared to what some people on this forum do, barely worth mentioning, but if I thought like you none of that would have happened.
This forum specifically forbids any talk of pirated material, it's NOT for people like you who download movies illegally. There are people who obsess over things in their videos that I'm not even aware exists, and no one on this forum should judge them negatively for that. It's those kind of people who ultimately drive the advancement of the video ripping field, advancements that in turn filter through to your pirated videos too. -
I agree. We've tried to give you seasoned suggestions and are responded to with infantile abuse and some self-serving pirating manifesto.
Go self-destruct somewhere else. You obviously don't really want help, and VH doesn't need more of your type. -

I know. I don't have enough space to store everything now, or the money to even replace the faulty disc so doubling the capacity for back up is out of the question.
And I really do need to get proper curtains at some point. -
drive the advancement of the video ripping field
I love VH help. I learned why my movies were stopping thanks to unpacking a bit stream. i learned how to fix the color, which the latter I would have learned on my own. I learned that the world is full of hypocrites that ask me to post torrent links, edit their own torrent links (i.e, Ex Machina), and the piss and moan over honesty.
AGAIN, this is my thread. If you think I am infantile, than a grown man would walk away and ignore something he feels is not worth his time.
It's chicken feed compared to what some people on this forum do, -

I suggest you take a little search through the VideoHelp archive and find all the members that are currently listed as banned.
Empty threats aside, if you continue with this attitude, you WILL lose. There's no getting around that. You're not as clever as you think you are. -
Where did I threaten you? What would be the purpose? About as useful as ripping BR's and then spending x $ on back up products, so they can be "wasting" their time on fixing media editing programs, just so they can make trivial threats about the ever so feared banned from a forum. Intelligent people think I am rather clever, what is it you do for a living? You can ban me true. I have banned before from here too, that's also true. Many others that I easily get back on for a purpose you will never know. You however can do nothing about your inevitable fate when you leave my planet. 7
