is it possible to make a dvd menu with TDA 1.6, and modify it with Dvdsubedit and PgcEdit so the buttons are transparent until you navigate to them with a remote or mouse? I know if the menu has existing "transparent" buttons, then additional ones can be added with those two programs.

Yes you can
read TDA manual man:
PSD file can be used for button images
When a "Highlight" layer is included in the PSD file, the highlight image will be generated in the opaque part of the layer.
If emboss or effects that make the image invisible are used for the highlight layer, they will be ignored.
Then the original transparency level used before processing will be chosen. -
OMG, it works! In Photoshop, with your choice of image for a button, with it's background empty, rename the button layer as "Highlight" and tick the little eye-icon to make the button layer invisible. Save as PSD file. Done.

Yes you can also hide Highlight layer
and Highlight will be visible only if selected
example psd attached -
Hiding the "highlight" layer is the key to making the button invisible until it's navigated to. If you dont, then it's visible all the time. Looks like the additional empty layer is unnecessary, so I'll edit my instructions.
