    In Linux open a Terminal window (Konsole in OpenSuse which I use) or in Windows open a Command prompt (cmd)

    sample
    ffmpeg -i somefile.avi somefile.mp4
    It's not important the problem be solved, only that the blame for the mistake is assigned correctly

    I assume you searching for explanation?

    As you didn't provided any details then i would advise you to check very good site https://trac.ffmpeg.org/ - everything is there - pictures are provided for examples also (some aspects video/audio processing) - encoding is plain command line - if you consider this to challenging i would advise you some ffmpeg gui frontend.
