  1. Hi,

I am outside UK and I am trying to download a video (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p02vmx6x/colour-the-spectrum-of-science-1-colours-of-earth) from bbc iplayer using methods given in this forum.
I can play the video in chrome using Hola vpn but when I try to download using the command -
youtube-dl --proxy "109.237.26.224:4444" -g -f best "http://bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p02vmx6x/colour-the-spectrum-of-science-1-colours-of-earth" , I get the error as "ERROR: Unable to download webpage: <urlopen error [Errno 10060] A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond> " .

Please tell me how to download this video.

    Thanks,

UK ip is needed to get url of video. UK ip is also needed to download video using dash or hls. UK ip is not needed to download video using rtmp.

So, use hola to get rtmp url of video, then use rtmpdump to download video from any ip.

I am currently outside UK and I want to download this video. By going through the posts in this forum it seems rtmp code can be used in rtmpdump to download videos from bbc iplayer outside UK.

I have tried youtube-dl, wireshark etc but could not find rtmp code for this video... I don't know which is the best way to download videos from bbc iplayer outside UK ..

There's a reliable way of getting iPlayer videos as AdobeHDS fragments, then joining them. Once your browser is able to play those videos (using either that extention, or proper UK proxy), you can get download links with addblockplus plugin (I use it in Firefox, but it also exists for chrome). You can use the URL of any shown fragment (file name ends with ...Frag#) and download the manifest file (.f4m - just to find out the highest bitrate value, for new programs it's usually 5070000, 720p 50fps). Find out the approximate number of fragments by moving iPlayer's slider close to the end and use a browser extension for mass downloading. I use DownThemAll for Firefox; it only needs to modify a single url from 'host/...Frag#' to 'host/...Frag[1:last_number]'. Then you can join the fragments with KSV AdobeHDS script or with its standalone version (easier: works without php installation).

If smth. wrong with hola, you'll need to find a http proxy for getting the links and to find a working one after some testing (it must show you located in UK). It might appear too slow for continuous playback, but for getting links you only need to start it, then download via that proxy.

By using addblockplus plugin it is sometimes also possible to download xml file with rtmp links, but those I've looked into were only for SD, and sometimes didn't work (outdated info, etc.). You'd also need a template to use the parameters from xml (rtmp server name, authorization lines, file ID, etc.) in rtmpdump commands.
