Hi everyone!
I have a problem that I think someone here can help me solve.
In my car, I am able to play dvds and videos from a usb drive.
the screen resolution is 1280x480
the aspect ratio is 16:9
Here is the problem, when I play a dvd the movie is perfectly full screen.
When I burn a dvd the movie is perfectly full screen.
NOW, when I play a movie from the usb drive it will not go full screen!
example:

the videos I am using are a 1280x720 resolution and same 16:9 aspect ratio
What do I have to do to the video file for it to be full screen?
Thanks in advance

It looks to me like the 16:9 video is playing exactly as it should: pillarboxed 16:9 on a ~2.67:1 screen.

What does the owner's manual for your car say?
Scott -
"the screen resolution is 1280x480"
that is NOT 16:9, your video is 16:9 1280*720
the player reduces the height and the width to keep the correct aspect and fit it on your display
two way to fill the screen, use ZOOM if its available
OR
crop the top and bottom of your videos when ripping
3rd method..replace the player with one that has the correct pixel ratio -

Thanks for all the replies so far guys!
I am not sure what you mean by pillarboxed and 2.67:1 screeen?
I do not have a zoom function when playing from usb drive. Only when playing an actual dvd.
Nothing in the manual about it. Only info about dvd's
What exactly is 16;9? Unfortunately no zoom function is available.
I rip my videos from youtube using torch browser. I checked and there are no settings to define how the videos get ripped. If I am wrong, please correct me.
I can not replace the player since its built into the car.
It is an 8.8 inch screen
Not too sure what that means?
circle? This is an oem screen
Maybe I am asking the wrong question? How about, "How do I rip videos properly in order for them to show full screen?" -
And what does it say about playing "an actual dvd"? Maybe knowing the actual player/car model would help...
4:3 and 16:9 and 2.6:1 are all examples of the aspect ratio of either the picture or the display, and, for the picture to be "full screen" without letterboxing/pillarboxing/stretching/cropping/zooming/distortion, those 2 ARs have to match.
DVDs probably don't actually match, but they have the capability to stretch/distort in the proper proportion to where the end result looks as if they DO match.
There are a number of ways to Rip+Convert (which is what you are doing, NOT just ripping), so you could very easily be doing it wrong. We need more to go on.

That is the aspect ratio of most HDTVs. It's the aspect ratio of most HD broadcast TV (not the aspect ratio of most movies). It means the screen is 16 parts wide by 9 parts tall. Or, since 16 / 9 ~= 1.78, the screen is 1.78 times wider than it is tall. If a 16:9 screen is 4 inches tall it should be 7.11 inches wide.
He means you should tell us the width and the height so we can determine the screen's aspect ratio. But in your image it looks like the screen width is ~2.6 times the height. If that's the case 16:9 videos should not fill that screen. They should appear exactly as in your picture: a 16:9 image with black pillarbox bars at the left and right to fill out the rest of the screen. -
Everyone! Thanks for all the help! figured it out!!
I read this thread: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/358136-Resize-a-video-to-fit-an-in-car-video-player
And the last comment was suggesting VidCoder
I used Vidcoder to change the the resolution to 1280x480 and unchecked "Keep aspect ratio"
Just tried it out in the car and its perfect!
Thanks again!
Scott, can you suggest a method where I can rip+convert to the proper resolution all in one shot? As I have said earlier I use torch browser or freemake video downloader to rip from youtube. Would love a better option!
Thank you! -

If my interpretation of your picture is correct, your newly encoded video is distorted -- stretched horizontally. A 16:9 video is not supposed to fill a 2.6:1 screen. I'm assuming this red box outlines the 1280x480 screen:
So the screen is ~2.6:1. And the picture from you original encoded video in the middle has the correct aspect ratio, 16:9.Last edited by jagabo; 16th Nov 2015 at 22:08.

your ripped movie has lost the aspect ratio flags ?
video frame of DVD is not 16:9 and NOT 1280*720, it is 4:3 720*480, the aspect flags in the DVD file structure tell the player to stretch the width aka Horiz to 16:9 ratio
typically APPROX 853*480
your car player is not seeing the info that says stretch the video, because you are not playing a DVD
you will need to make sure your ripped file on the usb stick is 16:9, 853*480
but your screen is not 16:9 and i don't know if it will play video FILES at any aspect other than the actual video frame size
try using mediainfo on your ripped file and see what frame size and aspect ratio is reportedLast edited by theewizard; 16th Nov 2015 at 23:57.
