  1. Personally I would like to backup my home video VHS tapes that are over 10 years old.

Now my question is, if I record from VHS into my digital 8 camera onto a hi8 or 8mm tape and captured the VHS film, would the copy be near a 100% since its recording somewhat digitally (although not actually digital).

What would be an approximate percentage of the original if I went from VHS to regular 8mm and VHS to Hi8 (using my digital camera as a recorder)?

    thanks anyone have a clue?

  2. There would be some loss of quality simply by virtue of the fact that the video will be traveling through your VCR and through analog cables to your camera. If you record digitally onto a Hi8 tape you will probably not notice a change in quality, or at least only a small one. If you record to an analog copy, you will lose quality, and then every successive copy with degrade further. My suggestion would be to record your VHS tapes onto a Digital 8 camera using a Hi8 or better still the HME tapes which are higher quality and longer recording time (albeit a bit expensive).

There are other options, and my recommendation would be to record onto a computer and then onto a CD-R or DVD-R. The problem with any tape recording device is that tape is very susceptible to decay and CDs or DVDs are much longer living.

    Best of luck!

  3. How much quality loss would there be on a VHS to HI 8 and VHS to 8mm tape using my digital camera?

Also if i made a copy on my Hi8, how long until the tape starts to degrade?
