Why is it that files that are DTS/ 1920/1080 are usually only available as 2.39:1 not 1:37:1 ( I think those are right), but my point is to avoid the black bars or letter box on dl files in 1080p.

I have never watched a BR disk. Do they all have letter box (black bars) when they are bought at the store? Is it not possible to dl a BR file that will not have black bars? Why are all the tv shows or movies converted to hd not filmed with black bars? I c/p the below explanation but that does not tell me why I still see the black bars or whether I can change it or avoid it.

Q-"When I download a 1080p movie, the resolution is not 1920x1080 but 1920x800 and there are black bars on my screen. Why"?

A-This is normal. The official resolution of a 1080p Blu-ray is indeed 1920x1080, which corresponds to an aspect ratio of 16:9. However, most movies are shot in 21:9 instead. To fit this on the Blu-ray format, black pixels are used at the top and bottom of the picture. When encoded for the internet, most people strip those black bars, which results in a 1920x800 resolution.

    Thanks.

  2. Any movie or video that's not shot at 16:9 has to be letterboxed or pillarboxed to 16:9 on Blu-ray. Only HD TV shows and made for TV movies are shot at 16:9. Most theatrical films are not shot at 16:9 but rather 2.35:1, 1.85:1, 1.37:1, and a myriad of other aspect ratios.

Ok so its not going to happen. So is there a program I can use to make a Br file like tv hd?

The usual recommendation is to use the zoom control on your TV rather than waste a lot of time damaging your file. If you insist, many programs have zoom and crop controls. Handbrake is one of the easier ones to use. Be sure to set cropping to "custom."
