  1. Hi! I'm a regular user of mkv toolnix. But for the last few days I'm facing unusual problem opening it. Whenever I try to open the mkvmerge mmg, it shows this message-

"The GUI is configured to use the mkvmerge executable from a different version () than the GUI itself (mkvmerge GUI v8.3.0 ('Over the Horizon') 32bit). This is not supported but will not be prevented either. You should change the mkvmerge executable in the preference dialog."

Now the problem after this msg is that, though the mkvmerge window opens I can't load a file in it. It shows this message now-

"Could not create a temporary file for mkvmerge's command line option calle 'C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\Temp\mmg-mkvmerge-option-3948-1446746630878' (error code 0, No such file or directory)."

    I already tried to uninstall-reinstall, didn't work.
I also tried -- File > Options > mkvmerge tab > mkvmergeexecutable to mkvmerge.exe but then again the same message.

Please, If you have any solution for this problem then please HELP me.

What version of mkvtoolnix / mkvmerge are you using?

THe newer versions has a new mkvtoolnixgui. But you can use the old versions, https://www.videohelp.com/software/MKVtoolnix/old-versions#download . But don't use mmg with newer mkvtoolnix versions.

  3. Thank you for replying.

Actually, I'm usuing the 32bit ver of 8.3.0. I know that a new ver. 8.5.2 is available, but I think from 8.4.0 version the developer removed the mmg gui. Now I'm not a very advance user and I'm really used to the old gui, so i didn't update it. I just know to continue with this version. But the problem there is now those error messages that suddenly appearing.

It started to happen just after I install the gMKVExtractGUI.v.1.6.3 and MKVExtractGUI-2.2.2.9. Though these little programs are working fine, I'm suddenly facing the problem with opening the mkvmerge.exe. After that I uninstalled both and reinstalled only the mkvtoolnix but same messages showing.

Can you please solve this problem....

  4. you know one think more... if i try to open directly the mkvmerge.exe from C drive installation folder then a dos window is opening for a quick second and closing. I don't know what it is executing because it's happening very fast and closing within a second but this is all happening. Same thing is happening also if I click the mkvextract.exe which is installed with the mkvtoolnix and is in the installed folder.

  5. mkvmerge.exe is the command line executable file which is why you get a rapid DOS windows. Just running this file with no parameters is basically running it but giving it nothing to do. The graphical interface is the mmg.exe file in the older version.

Did you just type mkvmerge.exe into the box or did you use the browse button to reselect the mkvmerge.exe executable file from withing the MKVToolnix program folder. You should have the entire program location showing if you used the browse button, ie C:\Program Files\MKVToolNix\mkvmerge.exe.
    Quote Quote
  7. No I didn't type. I used the browser button and selected the mkvmerge.exe from installation folder and there was the whole address in box but after selction and then clicking 'ok' giving me the same first message again. Why this is happening now? It's never gave me a problem like this!!! And why after uninstalling everything when I reinstalled, then again the same problem persists???

Possibly the Registry went somewhat-corrupted, since you said you "installed" MKVtoolnix.
First, give a try to CCleaner, Revo Uninstaller, or something similar.
Then, use the *portable* version of MKVtoolnix — just choose a folder, unzip, unrar, enjoy.

  10. El Heggunte, I already googled and then deleted all the registry entry manually. Restarted and reinstalled mkvmerge, but all fails, again that error message and the mmg gui not working, even the mkvtoolnix gui not working too.

Seriously what is the problem technically? Why is this happening over and over??
    Quote Quote
  11. But you reinstalled MKVToonNix. El Heggunte suggested using the PORTABLE version after uninstalling and clearing out the registry.

Uninstall and clear the registry again, but this time try using the portable v8.3.0 and if it is still giving the error try an older version, v8.2.0 or older.
    Quote Quote
  12. Okay now I tried that too. In case of the portable version (8.3.0) the mkvtoolnix-gui is working properly but the mmg.exe still not working. After trying to open the exe it showing this message-

"*** Caught unhandled unknown exception; terminating"

I'm really having some weird funny feelings now, seriously. Properly uninstalled the program, deleted the registry entry of mkvtoolnix under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software, deleted the leftover files folder bunkus.org from AppData\Local+Temp, restarted computer and reinstalled a fresh copy and after all this then when I'm trying to opening the mkvmerge gui, what I'm getting-

"The GUI is configured to use the mkvmerge executable from a different version () than the GUI itself (mkvmerge GUI v8.3.0 ('Over the Horizon') 32bit). This is not supported but will not be prevented either. You should change the mkvmerge executable in the preference dialog."

What else I can do, technically?? It looks like the software itself got some mysterious power over the Halloween and surely determined to not work at my convenience!! This is the only logical explanation I've to this problem right now.

Keep using version 8.2.0, I'm afraid

It started to happen just after I install the gMKVExtractGUI.v.1.6.3 and MKVExtractGUI-2.2.2.9.
Just to be on the safe side --- uninstall them, don't use them.

it really doesn't take more than a few minutes to figure out the new gui. install 8.5.2 and play with it a little. the old one is not coming back.

  16. Thanks for the link, El Heggunte.
I'm already using the portable version, but as I said there's only the mkvmerge-gui is working, not the mmg-gui.

aedipuss, I know that the old gui is gone for good, so that's why I was just trying to stay with the old version a bit more.

I even, after uninstalling everything related to mkvtoolnix, installed the lastest version of the program i.e. 8.5.2 which has no mmg-gui but only mkvmerge-gui. Here the problem is, the gui window is opening, file can be added but after that there is no tracks (video, audio, subtitle etc) of the file visible in the below tracks section.
Now what? Even the latest version is not working for me now.

Here in this forum, I was just hoping that someone may have a solution for me, to help me get rid of this problem. But it's seems now I'm the only person in the universe who is having this problem, because google proved to be no help, and Mr Mortiz Bunkus will certainly not entertain problem relating to an old version (8.2.0/8.3.0).

    .........What to do?!

    You're getting all wrong

mmg = mkvmerge GUI. Which has been replaced by MKVtoolnix GUI.
And yes, BOTH programs from version 8.2.0 work fine under Windows XP.
I suggested 8.2.0, exactly because mmg w/ mkvmerge_8.3.0 ALWAYS displays that annoying warning when started.

Is it possible one of the other GUI's came with their own version of MKVToolNIx and they're in a path directory?

Something told me to try MKVtoolnix 8.3.0 again, and now its mmg.exe works 100%-correctly

I already knew my XP machine is somewhat~b0rked, but hey...

Time to finally say good-bye to "Windows 5.1", I guess

I'm not getting your question? I'm not using different versions of the program at a time. Before installing any new or old version I delete the previous version. And that too include even the registry entries and any leftover files from C drive.

  21. El Heggunte, well till the version 8.3.0 there was actually two gui present in the program- 1. the old gui=mmg=mkvmerge gui and 2. the new gui=mkvtoolnix gui which is the only gui from version onwords 8.4.0
Now I was just wanted to stay with the old one i.e, mmg/mkvmerge. Problem is it's not working for me (ver 7.9.0/8.2.0/8.3.0). And now even the new 8.5.0 version is also not working, no tracks visible after loading a file.

  23. ndjamena, after installing the OS the i installed one by one the regular programs I use generally. In that line I installed mkvtoolnix old ver 7.9.0, I opened it and it did open without any error messages. Then I dumped the gMKVExtractGUI.v.1.6.3 and MKVExtractGUI-2.2.2.9 files in the installed folder of mkvtoolnix as required. I open each and it was working. Then I tried to open the mkvmerge gui and there starts the problem-- the error messages. Thereafter I uninstalled the whole program, deleted the mkvtoolnix folder from C, deledted reg entries etc etc. but whatever I do the mkvmerge program is not working for me thereafter. Either there is a error message or in the latest version there is no tracks visible in the tracks section. I hope I explained your confusion regarding my problem. So now do you have any solution for it...??
