    Hi all,

I've recently updated the K-Lite codec set to my computer and now I've noticed when I play some videos (it can be any, and it doesnt happen all the time with the same video) the PC can freeze. I end up manually rebooting it and the chances are it doesnt happen again.

I've heard that there is a possibility that it could be a codec conflict somewhere. I'm thinking possibly it might be an audio codec as the last time the codec kept doing a repeated sound, like it was stuck, and as soon as I pressed the volume button to try and get the windows ping all the pc froze.

So is there an easy way how to detect which codec is in conflict?

Also how do I uninstall individual codecs?

    Thanks for any help guys.

Codec packs are the scourge of PC systems. You simply do NOT need them. For all you know you have install all sorts of nasties with that upgrade.

    1. Do a full malware scan of your system >> malwarebytes is a good place to start
    2. Un-install that codec pack
    3. Just install the codecs you need. And you do not need that many
    4. Use players such as vlc that are not dependent on external codecs

    Thanks for the replies.

I did notice when I installed a recent version of k-lite codec pack the issue started happening.

I do tend to use VLC for watching videos.

So I'll uninstall k-lite codec pack.

If I need to install a certain codec to be able to watch/hear a video, is there a recommended safe site that I will be able to go to download it? Like some kind of safe repository site? i.e. so I know I'm not downloading a virus or anything.

If you are using VLC, it uses it's own codecs, so you shouldn't need any others. The same applies to MPC-HC (which I prefer).

The only reason you need codecs other than the players built in codecs is for encoding.
