  2. VLC and MPCHC give the same levels on my computer. Your original TS file and the MKV file you just uploaded also give the same levels. Something is wrong with VLC's configuration on your computer. Or possibly the video renderer. Try the different Output devices in VLC. Windows GDI should give you the correct levels but it's the least efficient. You need to stop and restart (not pause) playback in VLC for the change to take effect.

  6. In the Simple view it's just Output. In the All view it's Video Output Module.

i examined all of the options and they didn't change the output appearance.
maybe this is because my graphics card? i didn't install the manufacturer's driver (nVidia). Windows 7 default driver is used.

  9. There is a Dynamic Range option in the Video section of the Nvidia setup applet. Make sure it's set to Full (0-255).

u mean my guess is correct?

  11. Maybe. But VLC should have given the correct levels with Windows GDI output. Did you stop playing the video, make the change, then start playing the video? Or make the change, close the player, then reopen the player and play the video.

yeah i tried it with restarting playback (stop, not pause, then play) as well as restarting the player (vlc). but nothing changed. maybe i've to learn how to use and work with virtualdub instead of avidemux for converting through a script.
i didn't have time last night at home to download the driver for my graphics card (nVidia GeForce 6200). i hope i'll do it tonight.

  14. Did you set the Dynamic Range option?

In any case, your levels problem is limited to VLC so you shouldn't worry about it. Just use another player.

yeah, that's it. the dynamic range solved the problem.
what is it for? what does it mean? and why your video doesn't need this option?
before changing that, i tried divx player, jetaudio and media player classic and got the same result (didn't solve the problem).

  16. The dynamic range setting controls whether the video YUV [16-235] range is expanded to the monitor's RGB [0-255] range when the graphics card is doing the conversion.
