On an Acer Ell laptop running Windows 8.1, I notice that every time I play a video my free space decreases several hundreds of megabytes each time. With only 19 gigabytes of free space at factory default, I am now down to only 3.22 G free space left. This laptop uses half the HD for recovery to factory default, I assume.

I have tried to open Temp folder in the Windows folder, but I do not have permission and do not understand online instructions to get permission. I understand that there are a bunch of .msi files in there that I could safely delete to gain back the free space lost by playing videos. I use Daum Potplayer. Not sure, but I think using Windows Media Player does not have the effect of decreasing free space like Potplayer does, but WMP does not play certain formats such as .mkv, so no good for me.

I checked Properties of Temp folder in Windows and it is gigantic. I've only had the laptop a week, bought new. The attachment shows the location of Temp folder in This PC > Acer (C) > Windows.

Any suggestions? In one day, I have experienced going from 11GB free space down to 3.16G just by playing videos.

Do you have no permission to view the files at all?

I usually just delete all files in the temp folder. But you should be sure that it's just TEMP files.

No, no permission to open Windows > Temp folder..

Btw, just tried WMP. It also is decreasing free space. Watching just 2.5 minutes of an .avi caused free space to decrease from 3.22G to 3.16G.

Disk Cleanup only gained about 200 mb.

You must fix so you can view the files first. Can you login as Administrator? Or right click on the temp folder and see if your username is under Security.

If you play local files on your HDD should video players NOT create any temp files. It might happen if you play streamed video and it saves a temporary cache.

Right click on This PC > Acer (C) > Windows > Temp > Properties shown in the attachments. Don't know what to do.

It's strange that the Administrators has no permissisons at all.

You can try click on Edit and see if you can change any permissions on Users(Peter\Users) or Adminstrators(Peter).

Or else try google for windows 8 temp folder no permission. You can't be alone with this problem.
