I've already installed the AC3ACM22 codec but I still don't see AC3 added to the Compression drop-down menu in Virtualdub.
Found this blog which mentions having to change the registry but only shows how to do it to enable mp3 support:

My OS is Win7 64 Bit Home Premium.

I use this one with VD and W7 64: https://www.videohelp.com/software/AC3-ACM-Decompressor
It does show up in VD when you select audio compression as 'AC-3 ACM Codec and AC-3 ACM Extensible'.
.
And welcome to our forums. -
I already installed that one and it still won't show up.
Where exactly am I supposed to see 'AC-3 ACM Codec and AC-3 ACM Extensible' in Virtualdub?
Can you explain in step by step detail what you did?
And thanks for the welcome. -
Sure. DL the file and extract. In the X64 folder, R click on the Install file and 'Run as Administrator'.
Then open a compatible file in VD. I used a small .mkv (H.264/AC-3).
Then select 'Audio>Full processing mode>Compression'. -
That's exactly how I did it.
Still not working.
Do I have to restart my computer? -
If you use the 32-bit version of VirtualDub, you should install the x86 version of codecs, not the x64 one.
-
There is a 64bit version of ACM decompressor. And that's the one that should be used with VD 64bit.
But I haven't used it in a while.
And you usually have to restart your PC, or at least VD, to properly install some addon programs. -
If you install a decompressor-only ACM codec, it can only decompress, but you won't be able to use it to create a new AC3 audio stream.
In general, I would not recommend working with AC3 inside of VirtualDub, anyway. Avery Lee never supported it specifically, and some attributes of AC3 seem to go a bit beyond the features supported by ACM. Modifications of VirtualDub may allow multiplexing AC3 into AVI, but not edit it as nicely as raw PCM.
