I am new at attempting video editing. I had my old 8 mm home movies converted to DVD. It was delivered in UDF format. I want to edit the videos (using Pinnacle Studio 18 if possible.) What are the steps I must take.

"UDF Format" is just (one of) the filesystem(s) that DVDs, BDs and CDs use. A way of organizing and indexing data for retrieval (and any computer built in the last 15 years should be able to read a UDF-formatted DVD). It is the file/stream format of the contents on that UDF disc that determine how to proceed.
Is your DVD one that is playable in a normal, settop DVD player?
If NO, you'll have to give us further info (using ISOBuster or similar to read the disc).
If YES, your job is fairly simple:
"Rip" the disc, using DVDDecrypter (which doesn't need to decrypt in this case, but has other features that are helpful). You can rip the "main movie" in IFO mode (bypassing the file-splits, metadata, navigation, etc). This will give you MPEG files that you SHOULD be able to directly import into Pinnacle Studio, without any re-encoding or loss. You may, optionally also demux to raw elementary streams (M2V video, AC3, LPCM/WAV, MP2, DTS audio, etc.) for editor apps that prefer that method of importing.

Thanks for the response. Yes, the DVD plays on my Samsung BD-J5700. I used DVDDecrypter to rip the DVD. The resulting files are IFO, BUP and VOB extensions, none of which will import into Pinnacle Studio, or maybe I am doing something wrong there! The VTS_01 Stream Information.txt is as follows in case that is of assistance.:
0x80 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / LBA: 131 / PTS: 00:00:00.275 / Delay: -2ms
0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 720x480 (NTSC) / 4:3 / LBA: 2 / PTS: 00:00:00.278 / Delay: 0ms
