Source - 1 minute dvd clip, cropped and resized
    Used ffmpeg (28/09/2015) - http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/
Video: 500k on the 3 formats, 2 pass
Audio: 128k, not relevant for this "quick" test

    PC:
Cpu: AMD Athlon II 2.90ghz dual core
    Memory: 2GB

    Conversion time:
    x265 - 18 minutes - medium preset
    vp9 - 12 minutes - default preset
    vp8 - 2 minutes and 45 seconds - default preset
    x264 - 50 seconds - main profile

    Quality (from best to worst)
    1º - x265
    2º - vp9
    3ª - vp8, x264

CPU Usage (while viewing the video with MPC-HC):
    x265 - 18%
    Vp9 - 9%
    Vp8 - 7%
    x264 - 5%

Notes: By increasing the x264 video vitrate by 200k it would match the x265 quality, i was surprised by the vp8 quality and encode times, encoding with vp9 takes so long even longerrrrrrrr with x265 (18minutes for a 1min clip)

Despite the better quality i'll still be using x264 to stream video or for dvds/bluray backups.

In no way my test is perfect, the quality test/rank was based on my observation of the videos/screenshots of same scenes. Hope it helps anyone.
