I have two sets of ethernet-over-powerline adapters (Netgear XAVB 5004 hubs in the living room and bedroom, XAVB 5001 single port units in the computer room connected to the router, and in the spare room). They are AV500, and work great for streaming video etc.

I want to expand my network, and the Netgear units are no longer available. A vendor near me has some nice D-Link adapters, with AC pass-through, at a very nice price. I don't want to replace what I aler

I know that they *should* be compatible, as they are both Homeplug Av500 units. However, I have heard stories about different brands not playing nice with each other.

    My questions are:
    • does anyone have any experience of mixing powerline adapters from different vendors?
    • do different brands play nice with each other in practice as well as in theory?
    • how do you get on for pairing them, as I'm guessing the quick-connect buttons on the adapters don't work for cross-brand pairing?

    Thanks

OK, but that's not much help.

The vendor is basically a retailler, admittedly a semi-specialised one. The vendors all say that they are AV500 units so they will/should be compatible. And that is all, I suspect, that I would get if I asked the salesdroid. However, I have read accounts of people who have had difficulties mixing units from different vendors. I am trying to ascertain whether that is really an issue before I order.

What I was after, and thought I made it fairly clear I was after, was whether anyone here had any real-world experience in trying to mix powerline adapters from different vendors. Given that the readership here is fairly technically competent, I was hoping for some first-hand information on whether it's a sensible idea or not.

  4. OK then I wouldn't mix powerline adapters from different vendors. If you decide to do it anyway, please report back here and give us your results. It looks like most of us don't mix and match those units.

**************** Please disregard this post, I misread what the OP was asking ***********************

    hi,
Mixing bricks (ac pwr adapters) can be risky. Points to consider are (but not limited to):

    1) the output voltage level and regulation and whether it is ac or dc

    2) The input voltage and frequency

    3) the output connector size / style

    4) The polarity of the power connector end that goes to the device, positive on center or outside

    5) The output current rating.

    6) Ripple on the output if it is dc - usually not limited on the brick

Basically it's a user be very careful

I once fried a set of PC speakers by plugging the wrong brick into the speakers. I plugged the subwoofer brick in by mistake.

For safety I now always print out a label identifying the device and put that on the brick.

Some work and some don't. As you appear to be getting them locally, ask if you can return them if they don't work as expected. Otherwise upgrade and invest in enough units to support all of your devices.
