  1. Some QT files are protected and can't be converted using QT Pro 5 OR TMPEG, I've tried. ESPN had some Green Day files that were protected. QT to AVI, or QT to MPEG dont' work in either program, some just dont' seem to work...for me with those files anyway.

    Take it easy

mcdermd: Tried your method..didn't work. Still wouldn't save.

EO seems to make a TERRIBLE looking conversion. Is there a way to set the whatevers for SVCD so it looks a LOT better?

    Thanks in advance

as i said before, use eo-video to only make an uncompressed avi. Scooter. let me make another suggestion, goto wherever your qt file is and open it, just as if you were doing your everyday browsing. while that qt window is up, goto c:\windows\temp and look for a temp file with a size of zero. right click on this file and goto properties. make this file a "read only" file. once that is done, close your browser that has the qt file up. after you close it, go back to your temp folder and rename that file so it has a .mov extention. is should now play fine and can be moved or renamed to whatever you need

I will try what you suggested. As for EO..I tried the uncompressed avi and don't have anything that would play it or convert it to MPEG2.

Ok..I'll try that. I am trying to convert The Time Machine .mov trailer. It appears to be anamorphic so given that...

What are the ideal settings for Eo and what are the ideal settings for TMPG for:

    SVCD
    XSVCD

Thanks..I really appreciate your attention to this.

for eo, choose avi, under video choose "no compression" set the resolution to whatever the source is, set the audio to pcm (uncompressed). the default template for svcd works good with tmpgenc.

  9. I used Sony's Movie shaker to convert the mov -> mpeg-1 file, but it squeezed the video (like anamorphic squeeze) so everything looks stretched, will Tmpeg allow me to place black bars to make the video look normal?

well maybe, but you would end up reencoding the video and that will make it look worse. Why not just take the mov and run tmpgenc through it instead? or (as we suggested in this thread), run it through eo video to uncompressed avi (if it doesn't open in tmpgenc), then from that, to tmpgenc.

  11. Hi - Overall the best way to convert .mov files is:

    1. If the file does allow export in Quicktime Pro, just use that to make an avi (use uncompressed, or if you dont want to use loads of disk space, use divx encoder with a decent bitrate - also remember to remove all tracks except for video 1 and audio 1). Then convert the avi to mpg using tmpgenc.

    2. If Quicktime Pro gives the error "Cannot export as the file does not allow saving", use EO-Video. Use EO-Video to convert the video(just video, not audio as well), using AVI setting, the same resolution as the movie(look at properties in quicktime for this - remember that this value is the movie resolution only, you will have to add on the size off any pictures used on top ), and either use uncompressed AVI, or just use divx again. Once you have the avi file, then use Tmpgenc to convert it to mpg, using the original .mov file as the audio source, and the avi you made as the video source. Then just use your normal settings for what you want and encode it.

N.B If the original file has got a picture around it(as you cannot remove the tracks in quicktime), to remove this you will have to just use the clip frame option in Tmpgenc settings.

BTW i find the easiest way to get the .mov files from sites like quicktime.com, is to use a program called naviscope (www.naviscope.com). It is a little prog that monitors your browser and shows the urls of anything your computer is d/l, so once you click on the link on the tralier section in quicktime.com, the url will show in naviscope, so then you can copy that into a download resumer(i.e. getright), and d/l it like any file instead of geting it through the browser plugin(close this once you have the url in in you d/l resumer) so it wont matter if you then lose your connection. This is especially good for people on 56k, as you dont have to d/l it all at once, and can d/l the large res movies easliy. This obviosly saves direct to your computer like normal, so you dont have to muck about with finding the file. This trick works with any site that doesnt let you see the link of what you are d/l, and it also speeds up web browsing too.

    Hope this helps

  12. I recently had a lot of trouble getting a QT5 movie from starwars.com, even using streambox. I thought Apple had finally outsmarted everyone.
Using start --> find files or folders would not find the clip even though it's clearly sitting on the computer somewhere (I used tons of search parameters to be sure).

Anyway, a stupid, flukey trick enabled me to save it even though: file --> save didn't work.

I used streambox to get the 'referrer movie', a 70 kb file with a .mov extension. I opened that movie and waited for it to finish downloading.
    To save this movie:
Go to movie --> get movie properties.
Click the name of the movie and choose edit.
    Give it a new name.
Now attempt to close the movie. Quicktime will say "Do you want to save the changes" etc.
In the save dialogue you're presented with, one of the options you're presented with is "self-contained". Choose that and click Ok, and that's it.

QUICK EDIT: it's important you leave the previous dialogue box open, the movie properties one. Otherwise when you try to click save, it just refuses to accept the click, forcing you to do "don't save" or "Cancel".

    -----
a question for anyone else: I saw the true link for the movie at the bottom of IE's status bar, which was something like starwars.apple.com/media/ep2/attack_clones/gate/movie.mov
.. the gate part was different from the URL provided by the page's source.
Trying that url in streambox got an error, and looking at the detailed view I could see that it listed the 'Referrer' as a tiny html file I happen to have on my desktop. I wasn't using this html file for anything, and there was no reason to list it as the referrer.. except that it was in the same directory as the 70 kb referrer movie I mentioned earlier.
So does that mean streambox fails because starwars.apple.com is checking the url from which you're linking to the .mov file? And that url must be something specific for the download to take place? If so, is there a way to fake this in streambox, or by creating a dummy html file on my desktop, or something? I'm worrying about all this in case apple smartens up about the above method.

  13. Sorry, guys. I've *never* had a problem grabbing QT video from *anywhere* using the methods I explained here.

AFA the TMPGenc error, are you sure you jacked the VFAPI pluin setting for QT Movie Reader up in the Environmental settings?

After "re-building" the QT file (which really doesn't take as long as you think), you should be having no problems.

  15. On starwars.com there're 2 types of quicktime video clips: streamed and non-streamed; obviously those which are streamed are downloaded and viewed in real time, but the non-streamed have to download completely before you can view them with no interruptions.

I have QuickTime 6.5.2 Pro, and after downloaded some video clips such as R2D2 Beneath the Dome or Star Wars Episode II On Location, i tried to save them as i would with any QuickTime movie or trailer, but this option appears disabled; then i downloaded other movie trailers which i saved with no problem, so my QuickTime 6.5.2 Pro is working properly.

I searched my temporaly internet files and i found the video clips there, but even so i can't view them on my PC...are these video clips copy protected?...the sole purpose of allowing to save quicktime non-streamed videos, is for future and instant enjoyment without the trouble of downloading 30-50 MB files each time.

After all these videos clips availible on starwars.com are at least 2 years old, and copy protecting or streaming them is a plain silly for those who which to enjoy them several times, specially when somebody chooses not to included them on the DVD releases (missing Tone Poems, Featurettes, or the Beneath the Dome documentary, just to mention a few examples)...anybody can help me?

  16. I have to specify that the problem isn't downloading the MOV files, is actually being able to play them on my PC.

Even so the "save file as source" function is disabled on starwars.com, i have downloaded per example R2D2 Beneath the Dome video segments and managed to keep them complete on my PC (each file is over 50 MB long) either using a NET Transport or Mozilla, or simply copying them from the Internet Temporary Files.

But after i save the MOV files on my PC, and try to play them on my QuickTime Player, i recieve a message error 11004 (which in this case follows a image that asks me to reload the movie from starwars.com)

Error 11004 as explained in multimedia support sites, is atributed to trying to access an non existing file, therefore can't play it (which doesn't make sense, since i have the complete video files on my PC)

Please don't ignore my plea for help, anybody knows how can i save and play these MOV files?

  18. Thanks, i'll try this program and reply a post with the results (for other users with a similar problem)

  19. Indeed i can output the MOV file into AVI or WMV with River Past Video Cleaner, but the resulting file has only audio (not VIDEO) i have confirmed the lack of Video on TMPEGEnc (Black screen with Audio Signal)

Do i need a plug-in to fix this problem on Revier Past Video Cleaner, during the encoding MOV to AVI or MOV to WMV?

  20. Only came across this recently.

Couldn't save clip. Okay, clean out temp files, play clip again. Navigate to temp files, rename file to .mov, send clip to another folder. So far, so good.

Installed quicktime plugin to TMPGEnc folder, converted to mpeg. No audio. Hmmm. Uninstalled Quicktime player, installed Quicktime Alternative. Started up clip in Media Player Classic. Began conversion again.

Success! Something you might try, don't know if it will always work, but it did in this case.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

    1. Open up sw.com (or whatever you're getting) and let the video completely download.

    2. Go to your Temporary Internet Files and find the movie file (if you show
details and sort by last accesed, it should be a large file on top)

    3. Copy (don't move) the movie file from Temoprary Internet Files to your
    desktop

    4. Open up a Quicktime player (just a blank QT player - it'll usually load
up QT Hot Picks or something)

    5. Drag and drop the movie copy from your desktop onto the QT player window.

    6. Go to "Edit--> Delete Tracks" and delete all but the video and sound
tracks (there may be sprite, usher and possibly error)

    7. Go to "Edit --> Enable Tracks" and enable the video and sound tracks

    8. Go to "File --> Save As..." and select "Save as self contained movie",
give it a file name and hit "Save".

    9. You should now have a working copy that you can manipulate however you want (re-encode, edit, etc).

The only hitch is sometimes the movie file will be downloaded to your Temp directory (but that's not the case with most all of them). And sometimes they get really nasty by making QT delete the file from your Temp folder *before* it closes. When this happens:

    1. Close everything *except* the window with the QT movie in it.

    2. Now, simulate a power failure (push the rest button on your computer). This makes sure QT never has a chance to delete it.

    3. When the machine re-boots, the file should be a .tmp file in your Temp folder. rename it to a .mov and you should be in business.

One more intersting thing about saving these thing's you'll want to know. I
explained this process to a guy and he claimed that when he drag and dropped the movie file into the player, it gave him the error message and opened sw.com in a browser as usual. My system at home running Win2000 did not do that. So I tried it here at work running NT4 and sure enough, it would only open the error message (or give you the "This movie does not allow saving" deal), so here's what you do if this happens:

    1. Open the QT Sample.mov (comes with QT player - should be in the Quicktime directory)

    2. Drag and drop the copy of the sw.com video file into the window. This
basically appends the sample.mov with the movie info from sw.com

    3. Delete all the tracks except "video1" and "sound1" (the sw.com tracks we want)

    4. Move the "punch in" slider (the tiny triangle on the left below the
timeline bar) to the beginning and the "punch out" slider (the tiny triangle
on the right below the timeline bar) to the end of the QT sample portion
(the beginning of the sw.com video).

    5. Go to "Edit --> Cut". This cuts the sample.mov movie section out of the
    movie you're creating.

    5. Go to "File --> Save As..." select "Save as self contained movie", give
it a file name and hit Save.

I just used sample.mov as an example because of it's short length but you
can use any "unlocked" movie file for this. Do keep in mind that that you can also select the "Get Movie Properties" to edit the movie header info (title, etc)

The main reason I did this was to have clean files to convert into other
formats, such as DivX or VCD complient mpeg1.

    Good Luck.
I realize I'm dredging up a very old thread here, but I'm trying to save a copy protected QuickTime movie and this process is the only method I've found, yet it doesn't work for me. When I drag & drop the copied file from my cache onto a QuickTime Player window, nothing happens. Whether I have Sample.mov loaded or not, QT does nothing. When I try to open the file directly, QT says it's "not a file QuickTime understands". I'm 100% certain I've got the right file. I assume this is because of some change(s) between QT5 - the latest version when the quoted post was written - and the latest version now. Anyone know how to defeat QT's copy protection now? Some alteration to this method, or perhaps a new one?
