  1. I'm getting this error message in virtualdub " no audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format". Ac3-acm codex are in the list but still does nothing. I tried installing lame but it doesn't show up in virtualdub. I have the k-lite pack installed as well. What is happening?

Open Codec Tweak Tool, Directshow Filters, ffdshow audio decoder and set ALL TO LIBAVCODEC. Make this in both x86 and x64.

If not work go to PREFERRED DECODERS and set all to FFDSHOW. OK and try again.

With the file loaded, go to File | File Information. Under Audio Stream, what exactly does the codec line say?

Not that I've installed K-Lite myself, but the basic version installs Lav Filters, the codec tweak tool, DirectVobSub and a couple of shell extensions for displaying thumbnails and such.

The standard version adds MPC-HC, MadVR and MediaInfo Lite.

The full version adds ffdshow and haali along with a few utilities.

The mega version throws in some other stuff, but probably nothing all that evil. Only a few things I haven't installed myself individually on this PC.

Unless the installer configures things in a weird way, or inflicts unexpected horrors on a PC, is it possible "crap" might be a bit strong?

First I must preface this post by saying if you do not understand codec, probably installing only what an 'expert' tells you is best and only what you need.

That being said, I've Used k-lite for years and my PC fails at nothing... icons, codecs, players, everything but after 43 years of working on computers, I'm not afraid to change registry entries so my icons show correctly. I also use the mega pack since I want all the VFW codecs for Virtualdub. And for all the experts that like Their favorite players, go check and see the HUNDREDS of entries added to your registry so that players codecs can remain in their own folder.

Now, for everyone that comes here for help, you should NOT install ANY packs because unfortunately very few come for help if they could fix screwed up codecs and registry entries. It's best to ask which codecs you need for a particular reason and install only those.

My recommendation, because I had the problem you speak of, is installed AC-3 ACM codec 2.2 and AAC ACM codec 1.9.

Now AAC and AC-3 play fine

I may have to re-think my view on K-Lite and the world in general.........

It appears K-Lite has stripped ffdshow of all it's decoders. I assume the logic is it installs LAV filters as the directshow decoder because it's being actively developed. But..... Lav filters doesn't have a range of filters for processing as ffdshow does, so the K-Lite solution is for LAV to decode and output uncompressed audio and video and for ffdshow to process that audio/video. That way, you can still take advantage of ffdshow's filters without doubling up on decoders for every format.

That's an educated guess as to why the only ffdshow codec option is "uncompressed" in your case. I use LAV in combination with ffdshow the same way myself, only I use a regular version of ffdshow without all the decoders removed. The second pic in post #12 indicates the "set all all stable formats to libavcodec" option might re-enable many of ffdshow's usual decoders. Maybe at the same time it disables the those formats in Lav filters? Just an educated guess. I don't know.....

The ffdshow VFW configuration would normally look like this under the codecs list:

And the audio configuration like this:

Unless I'm wrong about how VirtualDub works, it requires Video for Windows codecs to decode the video and ACM codecs for the audio, so I'm not sure how ffdshow can help there even if it didn't have all it's decoders removed. As Budman1 suggested, you need something like the AAC ACM codec installed. Or a plugin such as the ffmpeg input driver for VirtualDub. It'll let VirtualDub open all sorts of file types containing lots of different types of audio and video. The main downside is you can't use DirectStreamCopy for the video or audio when they're opened with the ffmpeg input driver as it decodes them. If you're re-encoding anyway, that doesn't matter.

Because it is FFDSHOW AUDIO PROCESSOR no FFDSHOW AUDIO DECODER. Look:

Other tip, dont use Quicktime Plugin for open this file, use FFInputDriver.vdplugin

    Make this easy, link: https://www.videohelp.com/software/Virtualdub-AIO

    The installer contain all need.

    Any doubt, reply.

I guess we were probably working under the assumption you were opening an AVI, but your screenshot indicates it's probably an MP4 or something similar. Not that it matters. I tried the Quicktime plugin and it doesn't seem to do much in the way of audio decoding, so the AAC ACM codec or the ffmpeg input driver would probably be a better option. Although you could open the MP4 with the Quicktime plugin, which should let you use Direct Stream Copy for the video if you wanted to, and under the audio menu select "audio from other file". In the window for selecting the audio, change the dropdown file type list to "ffmpeg supported files" and then open the same MP4 again (the audio doesn't actually need to be from another file). The ffmpeg input driver will decode the audio.
