    Gspot was good in its day, but hasn't been updated in 8 years, so it is missing lots of codec options (including, ironically, your namesake). MediaInfo is a better bet, unless you need the specific Gspot features of MPEG frametype listing or system codec checking.

    yes, it's true, GSpot is old, then better MediaInfo

    Yes, mentioned GSpot as a second option, but mentioned it because it does indeed have some added detail not in MediaInfo. As well, the fact that it's portable relieves the burden of installation for the passive hobbyist who just wants to check on only one or two particular video clips on his/her PC.

    MediaInfo has portable Windows versions as well:

    Actually videohelp.com delivers links only for them (the same with MediaInfoXP), as far as I can see.
