    I heard that the region coding doesn't matter unless you play the dvd.

    If I buy DVD's in Japan, I want to rip, then transfer to DVD-R.

    (I'll have enough money for a QPS firewire drive)

    Before I leave, I will attempt to patch my Apex 660 to region 2 and then change it back to region 1

    well yes i think u can rip a region 2 disc with a region one becuase it only needs to unlock the drive to rip so i suggest u try it

    but..in order to unlock the drive, you need to play the dvd first...if the hardware is set for region 1, it may not be able to play region 2 in order to unlock it...

    however, i think the newest dvddecryptor can rip w/o having to play the dvd first (i think)
