I have used virtualdub with external encoder feature. During processing, the status window appears and I am unable to understand a few.

    1. Projected file size - Shown as '38304.90' MB, whereas my final file size was only '625' MB and video alone came to 587 MB. Can anyone explain this parameter and also about video data shown as No.2.

Your output AVI file contains a video stream coming from the video codec (2), an audio stream coming from the audio codec, and additional container data. They all are multiplexed into an AVI container which is written to the disk by VirtualDub (1).

Files larger than 4 GB can only be written correctly on volumes with a file system which supports such large files, mainly NTFS under Windows of the NT family (incl. 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10). If your target volume was formatted with a file system not supporting large files (e.g. FAT32), the resulting file may be corrupt.

Your video data rate (14239 KB/s) is surprisingly huge. Did you select any output codec at all? If yes, which? Did you configure it to use compression of a certain amount? And did you select a "Video" mode for VirtualDub which uses compression with codecs at all (i.e. not "Direct Stream Copy")?

Thank you. Actually, I opened an Mkv file of size 2.5 GB with avc video and ac3 audio. After editing, I saved it to mp4 with avc and aac configuring external encoders. I used crf 23 - x264 for video compression. So, can I take it this way, that the video and audio are decompressed in virtualdub and after processing re-compressed to the desired settings.

  4. Yes, when using the external encoder feature, streams are uncompressed (decoded) before they are frameserved to the other executable

Now you see how important it is to tell us all details right away. We had to know that you are using frame serving to external encoders, instead of a VfW codec, to explain this difference.
