  3. Use makemkv to back the main movie up along with chosen audio tracks and subtitles, then use something like avidemux or mp4box to mux to mp4 container.

There's no re-encoding involved so the quality will be the same of the disc and the process time shouldn't be that long.

    @ theewizard:

Who do you ask, ManiKz? ... I would agree to his recommendation to some degree. Due to technical reasons. Because it solves one of the most important issues between "video converters" and "consumer media structure": Many video converters can only handle one sequential movie. But consumer media like DVD Video and Blu-ray do often not contain only one single sequential movie; therefore many converters can't handle their content directly. MakeMKV is pretty good at extracting only the "main movie" (one PGC with one angle from a DVD, or one playlist from a Blu-ray) from the disc to one sequential movie file, which is an unambiguous intermediate source for file converters to compress them to their final size.

    @ efiste2:

If you have a DVD, never think in VOB files without taking care of the IFO files as well! Having a DVD is not as simple as having one AVI or similar. A DVD Video is a complex logical structure, and you need applications which know how to extract only "the main movie" from the whole structure of many VOB files its content is spread across, and many IFO files describing where to find which part of it.

I am not questioning whether the program works
I asked a simple question, is he the developer

Maybe I missed something else some where,
But it seems make mkv, is his answer to every question he answers

I will not pursue the question further

If you aren't re-encoding when going to mp4 from a DVD, you're still using the mpeg2 video codec and probably ac3 audio in the finished mp4. Not all equipment will play these in an mp4 container.

The most compatible codecs in MP4 these days would be H264 and AAC, which means converting everything, and the original suggestion of VidCoder would be fine for this.

Roku 3 will only play h264 in mp4 or mkv,it will not play xvid or mpeg in mkv or mp4 so best to re-encode as kerry56 advised. Most likely other similar devices will have some restrictions.
