Need some help making subtitles for movie.
Basic info:
File format: srt (using notepad for editing.)
Subs downloaded from Viki, needed major corrections.
Player: VLC player MP4 format... VLC by default reads subs in Windows -1252
Questions:
1. Are Viki subs in srt format or did I save them as the wrong extension?
a. If wrong format what is correct format/extension to read in default vlc with no changes?
2. How can I fix the center alignment of srt files?
How they show up: (dashes used to show centering since forum doesnt let empty space.)
----Hi...
How are you?
How I want it to show up:
----Hi...
----How are you?
3. Is it possible to align them the way I want?
4. Using handbrake it says char chode UTF-8, is this cause problem? There is dropdown box to select other type.

To answers (some of) your questions I made a screen recording (attached).
I also attach an edited version of the subtitle. -
Thank you for reply, video is very helpful. This help me understand more a good thing to do for subtitles.
Questions:
1. Is it possible to align them the way I want?
How they show up: (dashes used to show centering since forum doesnt let empty space.)
----Hi...
How are you?
How I want it to show up:

2. does the subtitle editor add the video as well? I am using handbrake if use .ass I think I need burn it in for vlc to read properly?
3. What do I do with all the html tags I not want there, those I like remove but it take forever? Is there quick find feature for these? example <br /> etc
These subs are made by Viki community mostly, the subs are hard to find that are good because is not seen movie which is sad because seems very good. I go through make many correction, spelling, change wording. Some have imporper punctuation, capitalization etc... -
1. Yes. As I try to explain in the video with SRT subtitles the formatting is determined by the player whereas with ASS subtitles you can have complete control over the formatting. My problem is that I don't understand what you mean by the example. Could you give numbers for subtitles attached to post #4 where this is the case or perhaps attach some screendumps? Is it possible to align them the way I want?
2. You don't need to Burn-In (hardcode) subtitles. Players like VLC will automatically open a separate subtile file if it's named the same as the video, ie Video.mp4/Video.srt.I think I need burn it in for vlc to read properly?
3. Actually you DO want them there. If you take a look at the video attached to post #4 at 6:20 you'll see that I insert a line break. This is done in in Edit Box labeled Text and you can't see the html tag here. Above that in the List View you'll see the html tag <br /> is introduced. This is not a part of the subtitle but merely a marker for formatting. The Edit Box shows how the subtitle will look. What do I do with all the html tags I not want there
Yet another reason to use Subtitle software as it - in contrast to Notepad - has Spell Checkspelling
