  1. Hi.

I noticed in Firefox that there are browser extensions that can download files from web-pages (pictures, audio, music, video, etc). Today I found some for Google Chrome.

Are browser extensions to download content from web-pages as good as download managers (Internet Download Manager, EagleGet) or youtube-dl?

It seems that download managers and youtube-dl can deal with some geolocation restrictions and encriptions. But can the browser extensions?

Do browser extensions get all the resolutions for video? E.G.: On youtube.

    Thanks.

  2. It depends on the specific situation, which website , which video etc...

IDM and Eagleget have a browser integration module that show up as browser extensions. They get some but not all versions of a video on youtube. (e.g. if your browser is configured to get flash, they won't access VP9 versions automatically) . Youtube-dl always gets you access to all free versions - but it still has problems with encrypted YT sites (IDM can't download them either)

  3. Thanks for the reply.

VPN is helping with three videos I wasn't able to access before.

But I was wondering if the browser extensions in Chrome or Firefox are good, or just get a basic 240p-480p download instead of the 720p or 1080p version. E.G. Before I came onto this site and asked some questions I only had and was using 123CopyDVD and it could get files from youtube. But it would take a lesser quality and they were webm or flv instead of mp4. Or webm instead of flv.

There are just too many extensions to try and at this point I don't see the need with IDM and EagleGet working. I am curious about the extensions capabilities. If they are free and at the level of some of the paid programs, why not check some out? I support freeware and open-sourced software.

  4. For youtube pretty good addon is Complete Youtube Saver: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/complete-youtube-saver/versions/ (sometimes the newest version is here and not at the main page) or http://www.cys-audiovideodownloader.com/Converter.html . Quite a lot audio and video codecs, containers, qualities to choose from plus ability to download subtitles.

Sometimes for DASH ('chopped stream') or when youtube sends separate audio and video streams or when you need to convert to format not native to youtube you need to add ffmpeg. The newest version from here: http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/

You can try Video DownloadHelper as well: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/ for 'all' websites.
