I've got one desktop 1TB 7200rpm HDD running windows 7 that I want to setup as my video workstation. System is 100GB and drive C is 835GB. I can reinstall Win7 if need be.
All my video and Vegas project files are on another XP 1TB desktop partitioned E drive.
C drive has the editor and programs. Both C & E are backed up to an external 2TB 7200rpm SATA
I've got a couple of old internal 7200rpm 250GB PATA drives lying around.
I'm reading that partitioning is now a bad thing - excessive heat and seeking, etc.
How would I setup my video workstation on the windows 7 desktop efficiently with all this crud?

OK...
The boot drive is 1TB partitioned into 100GB and 835GB sizes. (C & D)?
A second HDD is a 1TB HDD with a single partition. (E)?
Is that all wrong and is there also a optical drive in there somewhere?
If you want to add a couple of 250GB HDDs. OK, no problem if you have the data and power connections.
I dislike dividing a HDD into partitions. About the only time I do it is there is only one HDD in the computer.
Then I create about a 150GB boot partition and use the rest for storage. This isn't very efficient, but OK for most uses.
However for video editing or any software that requires a lot of disc access, I think it would slow down your programs.
My preferred method is to keep the boot drive separate. I would use one of the 250GB HDDs for that.
Or drop in a SSD 120GB as they are reasonable priced at present. Just clone your boot partition to the new boot drive.
Then don't multiple partition any of the drives.
The PC in my Computer details has 5 HDDs, a 120GB SSD for boot and a 1TB for EDIT, and the last three 1TB HDDs are just storage.
No multiple partitions. I also have three optical drives in there.
Backup is done to my servers over a gigabit LAN. But I also have some USB 2 & 3 portable drives and a couple of eSATA drives I can use
for backup.Last edited by redwudz; 10th Aug 2015 at 12:49.

Thanks man...
I'm just going back and forth between machines with the external 2TB HDD in the middle which is working well.
I just got a little fuzzy on the whole thing...living in Colorado and all.
