  1. I downloaded some mp4 movie trailers from HD-trailers.net 1080p with 5.1 audio. The video plays fine using Windows Media Player but I do not get any audio on my laptop. I also downloaded some movie trailers that are not in 5.1 and I get audio just fine. Any ideas why Windows Media Player is not playing the 5.1 audio? I am running Windows 7 OS.

Most likely a missing audio codec.

Open the file with Mediainfo and you can see which codecs were used.

MediaInfo is showing: audio stream AC-3

Would this audio play on a TV that supports the following Audio Codecs: Dolby Digital, LPCM, ADPCM(IMA,MS), AAC, HE-AAC, WMA, Dolby Digital Plus, MPEG (MP3), DTS (Core, LBR), G-711 (A-Law, u-Law)

Also, should my computer be able to play AC-3?

Thanks in advance for any help,
    yeto

Windows Media Player does not support AC-3 with a mp4 container natively. VLC or MPC-HC could play these without a problem.
For WMP to work you will need a codec installed.

Do you think a TV would play the audio if the video is loaded on a flash drive and played through the TVs USB port?

The only way to know for sure is to test it.

  7. My TV's manual doesn't specify support for AC3 in an MP4 container (only MKV), but it happily plays it anyway.
Chances are your TV's media player will play the audio. Dolby Digital = AC3.
