  1. Hi.
I've been using VirtualDub for a long time for all kinds of simple video editing. Trimming, cropping, deinterlacing, video capture, compression, deshaking with plugins and so on. During the years I've also fiddled with many other programs and video codecs and now I'm not sure what kinds of codecs I have installed.

But something happened couple weeks ago. When trying to open the Compression menu in VirtualDub it just shut down. No crash logs, no error reports. This lead me to think it was something about codecs, so after trying to reinstall VirtualDub (with no success about the crashing) I tried to repair/uninstall and reinstall various codec packs I know I had. Nothing worked.
Soon after VirtualDub stopped opening any files. Same thing, it loads a while and then just crashes with no message.

Does anyone have any clue what's it about and how to fix it? I've tried both 32- and 64-bit versions of VirtualDub and some codecs (also older version of VDub). I've tried running some tools to find and fix broken codecs and looking through Windows Registery. I've also tried Windows Safe Mode and VirtualDubMod. Other video editing programs work just fine.
I can't remember exactly when it stopped working, but there was the Windows update kb3079904 at that time, and some people have had problems with other programs after that. I have Windows 7 64-bit.

    TL;DR:
VirtualDub crashes without error messages either when trying to open a video file or when opening the compression menu. How to fix?

EDIT: SOLVED. Was about the newest ATI Drivers (15.7). Removing it and installing 15.6 fixed it.

Unfortunately I couldn't find any crash logs of VirtualDub. I'm not sure if it even crashes, it just shuts down.
The last information I can find of VirtualDub is Windows Error Reporting from couple weeks back:

I'm going back years for this...... but as I recall it's caused by an incompatible/conflicting filter/plugin that is loading at the same time as the program. It's one particular filter as I recall. Don't know if a site search would find the original posts but you could try that. Temporarily you could remove all filters from plugins and plugins32 sub dir until you find the bad one. It might at least load the program that way. it's likely one of the last ones you loaded or tried to use.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

Yeah I used to have dozens of filters and plugins, but never had any problems with them.

The problem here is that I've tried to remove them and reinstall VirtualDub without any plugins and filters but it still keeps happening.

Can there be some filters installed in some Windows directory and VirtualDub tries to open it?
I'll search through the forums to see if I can find something more.

  7. Try uninstall all codecs and codecs packs
    what OS you have?

Sure. I already tried uninstalling K-Lite codec packs, LAV Filters, FFDshow, splitters and every other thing I found. But there are probably still more of them somewhere. I can make lists of codecs with Codec Tweak Tool and saw that Premiere Elements had many of its own. My Premiere Elements also stopped working so I uninstalled it and need to reinstall after I get this sorted out.
But I still don't know where to look and what to uninstall.

    I have Windows 7 Home Premium (6.01.7601) (x64)

Here's the list of codecs from the Tweak Tool. Anyone see anything interesting there?
    http://pastebin.com/E0Q5YMzZ

EDIT: Looking through MSINFO32 it only shows 2 codecs. dxtory~1.dll and openen~1.dll. The OpenEncodeVFW says "not available"

Exactly. Or when opening a file (that is supported, otherwise I just get the normal error "file is of an unknown or unsupported file type")
I recorded a video of it. No crash errors or notifications

  11. First try disable ALL codecs and filters with lastest version CodecTweakTool in this section, but remember what was enabled:

Name:	01.jpg
Views:	450
Size:	73.6 KB
ID:	33013

don't enable codecs if you have already disabled from the list, remember what was disabled:

Name:	02.jpg
Views:	584
Size:	81.2 KB
ID:	33014

now try select in VirtualDub video -> compression...

    still closed?

    Yep, tried that already

If nothing works it seems like reinstalling Windows is the next step. At least that should do the job

  13. CodecTweakTool don't display all codecs
    try disable with InstalledCodec

Edit ...If this fail try with Filmerit
    delete from Video Ccompressors

Thanks, those seem like a great programs but they didn't help. Disabled all with InstalledCodec, didn't work. Also I've been restarting the computer every now and then in between the uninstalls and disablings.
Found six compressors with Filmerit, deleted them but VirtualDub still crashes.

Yes, different compatibility modes, as administrator, in Safe Mode. Nothing works

  16. Do you want last try with Process Monitor or you already give up?

Sure I can do that. Downloaded it, filtered to show only VirtualDub.exe, opened VirtualDub and selected compression so that it closed and now I have bunch of stuff shown here about what happened.
Should I somehow post all this somewhere? There are 7500 events or should I filter them more?

  18. when filtered to show only VirtualDub.exe, in Process Monitor click on clear button
then in VirtualDub select video -> compression
save list in Process Monitor to PML file and upload
I need only part from select video -> compression
Probably I don't find anything unusual but its last try

Sure, here. I open the compression at 12:18:22, which is about 1/4 in.

  20. Maybe I wrong but i think its related to AMD video drivers
To test this can you uninstall all AMD video drivers?
after uninstall Windows install generic video driver

Holy crap it worked! Now I just need to figure out how to use them both at the same time.
That's a weird problem, they're both trying to use the same codecs or the drivers interfere with VirtualDub or something?

Thank you so much for figuring this out Roma.

    I don't know
I just see from Process Monitor list to many activities related to video drivers
compare to my log, I have none (nvidia card) when I select compression menu
Not familiar with amd catalyst control panel
but maybe you can create specific profile to VirtualDub.exe

  23. Yeah I need to fiddle with the Catalyst Control Center and see about the profiles.

    Again thanks a lot
