  1. Hello,

Yesterday I tried the Background Video Recorder 2 app (ex Secret Video Recorder 2 but Google removed it from the store, they are same) which resulted in a huuuugeee frustration. My phone is Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. I stored the videos on an external SD. When I got home to copy videos to my PC I saw that the app saved videos as date-clock.mp4.renamed so they are not video files. I removed the ".renamed" part and over the 50 videos only 2 of them worked (sort of- too much buggy) and the other files cannot be opened by any player (for example, Gom Player showed "Find Codec" error screen).

    Can I fix those videos?

    Thank you.

  2. Odd that those files were renamed. Not too much info on play store about what codec they use. mp4 can contain various codecs. Noticed that it records in 1920x1080 so maybe your device can't display that resolution? Why don't you email them? There is a email address on the play store description of that app.

    Thank you for your interest.

Both my phone and PC can display 1920x1080. I emailed to them a few days ago, still waiting for a response. I tried video repair programs but they didn't work. However, all the files have the sizes of video.

Run a few of the good ones and a few of the bad ones through MediaInfo, and compare their detailed readouts.

If the bad ones don't include metadata involving video codec, etc., you could have garbage just named as video files.

To be fully assured, compare in a hex editor for known tags (either textual or binary). Lack of any tags at the head and in the bulk of the file means your chance of recovery has dropped to near zero.

I opened a file with the hex editor and the result is:

    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

    Zeroes continue and nothing else.

Also, I tried MediaInfo on broken files, it only showed the size of the file.

So, it seems that there is no hope left for me.

    Thank you for your help.
