  1. Hi.

I am unsure where to post this.

I live in Canada and have been trying to watch various videos on the internet that sometimes are blocked by geo-location. I don't live in America and there are videos I cannot watch. I am considering getting VPN, either pay or free.

Currently I do not have netflix or anything like that. If I did I would potentially have VPN for that. I'd have netflix in Canada and pay again for the American one. But this is not what I am using VPN for. I want to watch videos on youtube or other web-sites which could include yahoo news.

Are there any recommendations for VPN? Any type? Is there a difference between a pay or free one? Any advice is welcome too.

I hope it is not too complicated, it just seems it needs to be setup. And i hope it's easy to switch back and forth.

    Thank you.

    Brian V.

    For a paid vpn https://www.hide-my-ip.com/

Pay for your data as you go https://www.privatetunnel.com/home/
It's not important the problem be solved, only that the blame for the mistake is assigned correctly

  3. How many are there nowadays? Last year at the end of the year it seemed there was about 3-5. There seems to be more, but not too good.

  8. Do these services have bandwidth limits? My ISP only allows me to get a certain amount of data each month.

I have been reading that the farther away your VPN is, the slower your internet is. Can this become a problem? Or is it usually small? Since I am using ADSL, do any VPN's use dial-up or cable? Or that shouldn't matter.

  11. I was reading that most free VPN's keep track of your usage, are more willing to give your information to governments and others and probably send ad's. It's difficult to figure out who has a good range for their services and isn't sending ad's, etc. A web-site by the company isn't very informative.

Would anyone advise setting up your own VPN such as "roll your own VPN using Hamachi,....how to set up Privoxy". This web-site has some information and recommendations although it is kind of old. http://lifehacker.com/5940565/why-you-should-start-using-a-vpn-and-how-to-choose-the-b...for-your-needs

It seems some of the paid VPN's have more options and do more instead of setting up your own.

Lots of deal sites in Canada have forums with lots of info. I got 6 months free with one the other day. Black Friday sales are the best time for buying yearly subs as well as Usenet block or yearly accounts. They are always listed. Must be half the country using VPNs now...

  13. Anything not based in the US

NordVPN is based in Panama, as the country has no mandatory data retention laws and does not participate in the Five Eyes or Fourteen Eyes alliances.

It also has handy extras like private dedicated IPs in the foreign country of your choice
