I have ripped the same BluRay movie in three different formats..."avi", "mkv" and "direct copy" (using Acrok). Here are the final "ripped" GB and times to rip:

Direct Copy 26.84 GB 24 minutes to rip to PC
AVI 13.70 GB 1 hour 15 minutes to rip
MKV 12.67 GB 2 hour 57 minutes to rip

The image quality seems the same on all ripped formats but none include the main menu orextra features etc. My main question is : WHY the direct copy retains double the data (GB) but takes the least amount of time to rip?? Also, it seems many people prefer the MKV format but it took a whopping 3 hrs. to rip... so what's the advantage??

Thanks for any explanations on this subject... I have a ton on BluRays I want to rip to a NAS so I can watch them on my Home Theater through a media player and want to decide which ripping format would be best for me.

because direct copy is the original quality (bluray is untouched) . so it is very fast to copy 1:1
Your other rip were converted , so there is quality loss, even if you cant see it. The bitrate is lower. so it takes more time and cpu power.

you should try Makemkv... the quality will be untouched and you will get a mkv file
