I've been using megui for some time now. But recent updates have me scratching my head. Most of the video's I've encoded lately sputter and lock up. Most of the files are put onto a portable hard drive for me to plug straight in to the bd player, wdtv box or laptop when I go on trips.. if I re-encode the same files with another program such as bdrebuilder (which doesn't add subtitles that I've been able to figure out) or handbrake (which burns all subs into the mp4) they play fine..So I can't for the life of me figure whats wrong with megui..// I've went as far as reinstalling older versions of ffds, and avisynth and older versions of megui,,,But nothing is working...Any idea's would be appreciated

I am sure that MeGUI is able to create compliant results just as well. Provided you configured it correctly. Means, you will have to configure the x264 encoder to be compatible with a specific playback device, and you may even have to configure the multiplexer accordingly (e.g. MP4 containers may need to contain special flags that specific mobile players will accept them).

  3. The MeGUI encodes stutter no matter what you play them with, even the laptop?

You'll probably have to be fairly specific when it comes to the encoder settings you're using and the output format etc. Maybe post the log file for an encode that won't play properly, and use MediaInfo to post all the details of a file that doesn't play, and also do the same for an older one that does. It might help to discover what's changed.

I had a look in MeGUI's updates folder (located "C:\Program Files\MeGUI\update_cache" on my PC), and it appears MP4Box was updated about a month ago. The latest file is "mp4box-0.5.2_rev376.7z". If you're also using that version and your output tends to be MP4, that'd be somewhere to start investigating. You could probably roll back the files in the "MeGUI\tools\mp4box" folder to the older versions to see what happens. Open Options/Update first though, and have a look to see if you're using that version of MP4Box. If you're not and you're still using an older one (probably mp4box 0.5.1 rev4929)..... or you tend to output MKV rather than MP4..... well there goes that idea....

I looked at the media info file and see nothing different except for the avc level..But I've always used the "auto guess" function...Here are the 3 files...I also tried to "roll back" to previous version of ,p4 box, but got a "no previous version" message

    Appreciate the help....

  5. I didn't know MeGUI could roll tools back to older versions. How did you try to do it? Maybe I'm missing the obvious.
To "roll back" I do it manually by navigating to the folder where a particular tool resides, removing the "backup" extension from the older files, after deleting the current versions of those files (or moving them to a different location etc). For example "mp4box.exe" would be moved/deleted and "mp4box.exe.backup" would be renamed as "mp4box.exe". Do you have backup versions of the files in the MeGUI\tools\mp4box folder?

I can't see anything obviously wrong with your files, but if it was me, my first trouble shooting step would be to remux the files to see if they play, probably as MKV rather than MP4 as MKVMergeGUI makes MKV much easier to work with.
Try opening a problem MP4 with MKVMergeGUI. It was called mmg.exe and could be found in the MeGUI\tools\mkvmerge folder, and it still might be, but a new GUI for MKVMerge was released a while ago and I don't think the exe that runs it is called mmg.exe any more, but it's probably got a similar name (I don't know as I'm still using an older version of MKVToolNix with the old MKVMergeGUI/mmg.exe. You can also use MeGUI's muxer, but MKVMergeGUI is easier. Open one of the problem MP4s with it, click on the button to start muxing and when it's done give the MKV it creates a test drive. The players you mentioned in your opening post should play MKVs, with maybe the exception of the Bluray player, but if it'll play MP4s it's very likely it'll play MKVs too.

No-I don't have any back up versions I can find..I just right clicked the file and click restore to earlier version....didn't find anything...Oh well, I'm at my wits end..I've deleted, reinstalled, deleted again....Just can't get it to work. Wondering if maybe some other software I installed some time ago is affecting it. I can't even get makemkv to load and do anything...Maybe it's a system thing...Appreciate the help...But I think I'll let it go for a while. I'm not much in to movies as much as I used to be and was just trying to rebuild my nas...

    Indeed, I would agree here.

Just as example, some "super duper mega codec packs" were notorious for tweaking the Windows media system preferences in a way that not all applications worked correctly anymore.
