    Video apparently plays in VLC, but only black screen shows and no sound. Apparently downloaded with no problem, PAR files were OK. Something is playing because 'time elapsed' and 'time remaining' can be seen counting.

    ffdshow is installed.

    Here is a screen shot of G Spot. What is indicated by 'codec status undetermined'?

    Does the problem lie with the 'unneeded bytes at end of file'?

    VLC Player has its own internal decoders. It wont even look at ffdshow. GSpot sez the video is encoded with WMP version 9 codecs for asf and wmv files. Low tier stuff. Try Windows Media Player (aka "WMP"), Media Player Classic, or MPC-BE.
