  1. I'd like to make my (region-2) Sony BDP-S590 BlueRay player region-free. From what I've read certain "One for all" remotes are being used and my guess is that the key is having the "Magic" button, but I'm not sure.
More to the point: does anyone know if the One for all Smart Control URC-7960 will be suitable for making the S590 region-free? According to this thread the above remote has been successful in making a Sony BDP S-360 and BDP-S370, but I'm not sure if this means it'll work with all Sony BlueRay players (except those with region-1).

  2. You've no doubt seen this thread as well:

I'm sure folks have tried your proposed method.

I've unlocked several Sony RC2-devices over the years, and all of them accepted the same codes to unlock. I didn't have to re-assign any codes to buttons on my remote, just had to press the same sequence of buttons once more. I'm not sure I used exactly an URC-7960, but from memory, mine looks very much like one.

Keep in mind that only the DVD-part of the player can be unlocked with a remote hack.

No, I hadn't seen that thread stating there's no region-free hack for the BDP-S590.
However, this, and this thread (probably others as well) says how, and that it's been successfully.

So the conclusion is that as long as you can input a code from the remote (i.e. "Magic" button) then that remote is suitable?

I don't think there is any more information we can give you at this stage, and nobody will be able to confirm your conclusion.

If you want proof, go out and start buying programmable remotes, try them on your device that might be unlockable and see what happens. If I were you I'd go for a model of remote that has been successfully used to unlock (other) Sony devices. It's your best shot.

  7. Good advice. I have read that the URC-7960 has successfully been used to unlock other Sony BDP-S series Blueray players, and since it's a nice replacement for up to 6 remotes it won't be a total waste anyway, so I think I'll go for it.
