Hello,
I have ts files from DVB-T tuner (mpeg4). The output files obtained after cutting and conversion (by Avidemux) from ts to avi (or mp4 or ts) are markedly smaller than expected. I'm using copy mode to both video and audio streams. Is it possible? Are the commercials removed such a large volume?

Yes it's normal. Transport streams typically have 4-8% higher overhead than containers like MP4, MKV. So even if you didn't edit it, it will be smaller if you used a different container
Also, they usually have other streams other than video and audio (metadata, subs, captions, descriptors), which you might have been discarded -

Yes, I expected 10% higher overhead. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), the output files size is only 70% of input TS-file size. Is it possible? Are the metadata 20% of TS-file size?Originally Posted by poisondeathray

I suspect there were other audio and video streams in the original TS that were discarded (often you will have other language tracks for example)
Use mediainfo (view=>text) on the original, and edited file, then copy & paste the text report back here
You said you used "copy" mode by you could you have inadvertently re-encoded the video and/or audio ? -

Since you cut out the ads, the video wouldn't happen to consist of not much happening onscreen would it?

Yes, copy means no re-encoding
If it re-encoded, then the mediainfo report would look different with x264 metadata
It looks ok, did you check the output file ? Sometimes avidemux will have errors on the cuts (especially if you didn't cut properly on IDR (key frames) . You might be missing unexpexted parts of the video, or other errors
If output file is ok, unfortunately that implies that your content provider uses disproportionately higher bitrates for the commercials, lower quality for the program
I wouldn't use AVI for the container, there can be problems with AVC in AVI both with muxing and various playback software and hardware
Avidemux is a bit buggy, but it muxes with the field rate, not the frame rate => this can cause problems with some players and hardware

Remux the entire source video and see how big it turns out.

What do you suggest? Other profile for Avidemux or other software (I prefer free software for linux but windows )? I used avi profile due to it worked fine with joined files while mp4 profile - not (the DVB tuner splits files over 4GB). Try MKVMerge to make an mkv out of it and see if it makes any significant difference.
Other than that, it is 2 hours worth of metadata isn't it? And that includes the TV guide apparently, which would be repeated over and over. You've recorded just ONE low bitrate SD channel from the stream so it's possible the metadata is causing the difference. -

If you look at the mediainfo stream size of the original
Stream size : 2.45 GiB (79%)
Stream size : 285 MiB (9%)
Stream size : 214 MiB (7%)
2450 + 285 + 214 = 2949 MiB => that is what non edited audio & video without container should be . That TS overhead is ~5% in this case because File size is 3.1 GiB
For example take tsmuxer, and demux 2 elementary audio & 1 video, it should be close to 2949 MiB
Often what happens with broadcasts are errors/ discontinunities cause drops or glitches - there might be missing parts or errors -
You could try extracting the elementary streams from the MKV, then remuxing them back into a file while forcing the frame rate and see what the duration of the new file is. (Then look at the duration tags for each stream.)

I could not watch this long movie yet (and check it), but I used another program - TSDoctor (unfortunately - not mine). The output files are the same size. TSDoctor inspects the ts-file and doesn't indicate corrupted parts. So, the Avidemux probably works properly (excluding file header) and the ts-file from dvb-t tuner includes extra, redundant data.
