SO a plan has finally come together
I am going to spend the next few weeks amassing some of this gear, here is my shopping list
Canon XL2 camera (used but in good shape)
Videolight of some sort that is portable
DSS (Dual system sound) as a backup only, my goal will be to run the mics from the camera since this camera has excellent preamps already on board
A sturdier tripod, also looking into mono pods with feet to get nice simul dolly shots (tripod needs to be very lightweight but able to hold the camera)
I will keep the rode videomic as I have found an adapter to plug it into the canon xlr input, plus it makes a great boom mic
I cannot travel with a boom pole, but I have an idea on using a heavy duty selfie stick , if i need further reach on a shoot I can use gaffers tape to wrap it around a pole or tree branch or whatever, its the best use for those stupid sticks ever, plus the videomic weighs (nothing)
the necessary cables and adapters needed
still not sure what to get but I need a way to convert the tapes to digital (firewire to ???)
I will purchase 50 DV tapes, take ten with me, and send them home when they are done, and exchange them for more, that way the originals will be kept safe in the USA (not sure on how that will work yet)
I already own my lav mics, but I might look into getting a better brand
Probably will pic up the other canon lens as well, you can get then with scratches and dents on the PAINT, for like 150) i think that is the wide angle version, this will allow me to mix up my shot list
Extra batteries and charger of course
tape cleaner device
I want to modify my steadi rig to fit this camera, so I can mount it if need be
I will take a car backup camera monitor along with a 12v rechargable battery pack to make a field monitor on my rig
pair of portable but solid headphones for shoot monitoring from the canon sound
Some sort of $150+ digital point and shoot to at least capture photos
An external drive (which I already have, but its a 5400 rpm in an enclosure) to store the footage converted from tape
LW as the primary editor, with Blufftitler DX Super pack, to handle title sequences and end sequences, Adobe fireworks to handle minor graphics adjustment, ( I wanted blackmagic fusion, but when I tried to run it I got an error about my video card, so this ultrabook is obviously not powerful enough)
The episodes will be shot, edited then produced and uploaded
I am going to try to avoid ADR or Foley or post sync, I think if i shoot this straight up while not perfect at least it will be real, my edits will only be to shave off pre and post roll on a cut, the rest will be kept in!
My shooting schedule will be something like this
day 1 (on the ground location and shot schedule research)
Day 2 + 3 (shoot days)
day 4 (edit day)
day 5 (upload)
day 6 + 7 (rest days)
Recycle for next episode
Thats all I got for now! I am sure lots of things like dollys, cranes, jibs, sliders, can be made on the ground at each location, or similar things fashioned
Hopefully this will all work, it starts with securing the camera! If you know anyone in the market for an awesome dslr with insane lens for a good price give me a shout!

XL2 was good in it's day, but is a DV camcorder - SD format . So if your final deliverable is standard definition like DVD, it might be ok... but in today's world, you need to shoot HD for web delivery - it's almost an entry level minimum requirement . It has very tiny sensors and poor sensitivity but will be fine if you have lots of lighting. On the plus side, it's CCD (no rolling shutter)

Poison,
I only plan on final delivery for 480P as my final product
This camera can do that (rolling shutters are somewhat a mystery to me still) -
maybe a better response would be, sticking with HD, what would be an alternative , hdv
-
It shouldn't be. Your "ISO outside" (parking lot) sample showed it very badly at the start -- when the camera shook as you started shooting.

Here are two consecutive frames from your video (animated GIF):

yup thats me jerking the camera on the tripod, lol, I can see where you might think its "rolling shutter" though
Im an awesome photographer, i suck at video -
Seriously? Anyone who in 2015 want to make motion pictures in SD......?
If you are on a budget at least rent the equipment.
For crying out loud you can rent a Red Dragon for a few hundred bucks.

It sounds like you're taking the time to do the proper research to make an informed decision - thats's good
When you have a limited budget - you need to make tradeoffs . You have to decide where you're willing to sacrifice things. It's all about pros/cons
I don't know about your project specifics, but resolution isn't one of the things I would sacrifice these days. Not when almost everything is HD and moving to UHD . Even a cheapo HD camera will produce a cleaner, higher quality image in the end than the XL2 . But a cheap HD camera won't have "pro" features like XLR audio , timecode , etc.. and will have bad rolling shutter from low scan rates. A cheap HD camera will be deficient in other areas and need to be handled with more care - it's all about trade offs
SO its a crime to want to shoot SD footage, like we have never watched that on TV before?
You're from a still photography background - an analogy would be what if you delivered 2 Megapixel shots to your clients as a final product ? Sure they can have artistic merit, they can be wonderful, capture the moment precisely... etc... but there is an expectation nowadays to deliver more. -

Thats why I was thinking of something in this neighborhood
http://epfilms.tv/top-10-semi-professional-video-cameras/
Any one of these can be had used for under a few hundred and WILL get me HD correct?
I WOULD NEVER deliver 2 mp photos, that is horrible, You have to give them the full res (sometimes this can be upwards of 15 MB per shot)
As for this conversation it seems to be two sided. One is the fact I need a camera and have very little production budget to work with, so obviously a slightly older (And still HD) camera running tape has its good points, and the other part of this is the noise reduction for my still camera which i have now decided to abandon in favor of a more suitable rig.
Lets close this conversation and start a new, so the focus of the thread can be on point!
I invite you all to come to the new thread with me, as I value your blunt and up front input!
Thanks Again -
Yes - everyone in that list is HD . They are all CMOS too (most modern cameras are), so rolling shutter. Only more expensive pro cameras right now have "global" shutters for CMOS sensors (with the exception of the Blackmagic 4K, but that's considered lower end, or entry pro level) . Global shutter has disadvantages too. It usually reduces sensor latitude by ~ 1 stop .
And that's exactly the sentiment for a cinematographer - they are thinking the same thing in terms of SD video - that comment was just to put things into perspective
But even more importantly, HD is everywhere, on TV, youtube has been HD for many years, cellphones shoot HD. So consumers (at least in modernized nations) have an expectation of HD right now.
Even a "lower quality" HD is forgivable, but SD almost is never forgivable these daysLast edited by poisondeathray; 28th Jul 2015 at 21:04.
