Combining multiple MTS files into one with transitions

I have several videos I recorded with my camera in MTS format, never really heard of this format before but my PC seems to have no problem playing it.

Anyway, I want to combine these several videos into one, however, I also want to add a simple transition between them so the resulting video doesn't just jump from one clip to the next, such as a quick wipe left or similar.

Is there any simple and freeware application that can do this? Or would I need to use avisynth? Avisynth always confused me and I would like to try to finish this quickly, it always took me weeks to figure out an avisynth script.

Maybe aviutl but it might be that simple...

Or free adware/bundleware/limited editors like videopad video editor, VSDC Free Video Editor...but I have never tried them so I have no idea if they support mts.

Maybe Windows Movie Maker. I don't use it but it's simple to use and may suit your needs. Just tested if it accepts m2ts/MPEG and it does.

Funny thing, I DID figure out the AVS shortly after posting this... but, now that I have the AVS correctly set up... I can't seem to encode it.. MeGUI keeps crashing early into the encode with the error "avs4x264mod.exe has stopped working".

Any suggestions what I can use to encode this or why MeGUI may be crashing?

AvsP shows nothing wrong with the file, and the AVS played fine when I loaded it in MPC:HC to test it.

No idea why MeGUI should chrash but you could try XMedia Recode and see if the same happens.

Xmedia Recode is giving me issues with a different file now, instantly crashing when I try to encode it.

I have tried EVERYTHING with the AVS and nothing seems to work in multiple encoding applications!

Any suggestions? I wouldn't mind installing a freeware video editor instead of using AVS, just as long as I can get this thing done. Thing is, most of the free ones are linux only, and I am on Windows.

MTS is a container, not a format. It's a common container for encoded BluRay and AVCHD. Look at your camera's specs and user guide.

Clearly you have not tried everything. Aviutl will have no problems editing the MTS files from your camera. It is free and runs under Windows. It is very advanced however, so it may prove to be a very steep learning curve for you. Maybe too steep, maybe not. I'll bet there are other easier to use free Video editors like Shotcut for example.

If you can get your project done quickly, all the major NLEs (and their little cousins) have free trial periods from 2 weeks to 30 days. Try Vegas Movie Studio for simple or Premiere Pro if you're ambitious.
