Im running a 1.4 AMD with Win XP
I have defragmented my drives
I have run AD AWARE to get rid of any spyware files/programs.
Closed all running programs/windows
Almost ever time I try to convert an ASF it COMPLETELY freezes up my computer and I have to Hold the power button to shut it off.
After a bunch of TRIES at the SAME asf it will work USUALLY.
I am NOT using the computer AT ALL while the program is converting.
I have pulled the AUDIO using virtual dub too.
I dont have a screen saver and my Hardware is set to NEVER TURN OFF.
Is anyone else having these problems?
Are ASFs tougher to convert than other types of VIDEO files?
FOR THOSE that are NOT having any problems with TMPEG are you able to use your computer while it is CONVERTING? I have read posts of people opening TWO TMPEG windows and running 2 conversions at the same time. It seems if I even move my mouse while its converting IT WILL FREEZE UP QUICK. NOt to mention not being able to check EMAIL or SURF the WEB while its converting.
I have heard of a program for XP that lets you turn off ALL PROGRAMS and PROCESSES so you can dedicate your system to the selected aplication. Is this necessary?
I am really stuck here and HOPE you guys have some input on this.
Thanks a lot
Will

Get TMPGEnc 12a or VirtualDub 1.3a, they can handle those Microsoft File types, newer versions will not.

Well I JUST downloaded the 12a version but same problems.
I have also run ASF TOOLS on the ASF files to FIX them IN CASE they were the problem.
I am now going to try and convert LARGE AVI to VCD and see how that goes.
Maybe it just doesnt like these ASFs that I am using.. They are all from the same source.
PLEASE post replies any of you may have about my problems.

Darnit,
Same thing with AVIs. I tried a few different AVI files and it FREEZES my computer.
Does TMPEG have an INSTALL PROCEEDURE.
After I downloaded it, I run the EXE file and it unzips it into a folder and thats it. You have to access the folder to run the program. Of course you can MAKE a shortcut.
Is that it? No regestry settings? Is it that simple?
What the heck could be making it freeze up?
My computer is NOT SLOW.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

Well, I had the exact same problem
. You should check your CPU temperature when it's converting, mine got to 80 degrees Celcius, way to HOT

Do you use the highest quality setting?
I had the same problem, but when I used normal or high quality it worked.
OH -
I indeed used highest and it freezed, but not on normal mode, but that's cuz normal uses less CPU power, I guess, and then it doesn't get to hot.
How did I fix this: well, first of all; it was my own fault, the cooler was placed wrong on the AMD cpu. But I got a new cpu form the store(warranty) and that ofcourse fixed it. So check it first.
Happened to me twice with the same cpu, so check the cooler when it gets to hot"After every storm, if you look hard enough a rainbow appears", Mariah Carey -
Jack,
I ran a WIN based CPU TEMP proggie and it showed me at 59 Deg Cel.
Thats not too hot is it?
Can you now use the HIGHEST setting with your new cooling setup? -
TMPGEnc does not handle ASF files. The only way to encode that I know of would be to use Virtual Dub 1.3c (ASF support was pulled after that version due to Microsoft threats) and frameserve the resulting video to TMPGEnc (does not matter which version) for encoding to MPEG.
Hope this helps. -
How many of you are able to MULTI TASK while using TMPEG? How much have you been able to do while TMPEG is encoding? I.E. Burn CD, Surf the web, EMAIL.
COULD my CODECs be the problem? I have installed QUITE a few different CODEC packs on my computer. I basically installed Different Packs untill ALL of my media files ASF, ASX, DIVX, AVI MPG and such would play properly with sound.
I just want to be able to use TMPEG without worrying about it FREEZING UP.
What a drag when you come back into the room an hour later to find it froze up 5 minutes after you left the room.
Any more ideas guys?
Thanks for ALL YOUR HELP. I REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

Hi Will,
Now everything works for me in TMPGEnc, even in the highest mode as it should, but I only convert AVI's but you had that problem too, right?
Did you convert the movie while you checked the temperature???
Or when you were doing nothing??
If this was the temperature when you were converting, then it's perfectly fine and it has to be something else. This something then has to be your memory, I guess; internally or cache on the cpu."After every storm, if you look hard enough a rainbow appears", Mariah Carey -
oh, I forgot; I can do anything while converting, even play a game, but then it will take longer to encode.
And I know how you feel; everytime you encode, being afraid it wil freeze and it does"After every storm, if you look hard enough a rainbow appears", Mariah Carey
