Cannot capture from webcam

I'm trying to capture video from a webcam. (The webcam works in other programs.)

Capture device : /dev/video0
Audio device : hw:1,0
Video standard : PAL


main error: open of `v4l2:///dev/video0' failed
v4l2 error: cannot start streaming: Input/output error
v4l2 error: not a radio tuner device
v4l2 error: cannot start streaming: Input/output error
main error: open of `v4l2:///dev/video0' failed

Obviously no radio tuner should be involved.
I tried blanking the radio device field in advanced options, but this did not work.

We see linux involved but without knowing the name of the application being used we can only guess as to why the error exists.

Oh, sorry. I didn't realise the forum dealt with more than one application.

This is vlc from the LinuxMint package 2.1.6-0ubuntu14.04.1

Started from the GUI menu with:
/usr/bin/vlc --started-from-file %U

Other installed packages:
vlc-data
vlc-nox
vlc-plugin-notify
vlc-plugin-pulse

Try entering this into command line

vlc v4l2:///dev/video0

Linux EasyPeasy appears functional ... but with so much variance between linux distributions... things tend to break.
