I have a number of personal DVD's that I want to turn into an iMovie but have no idea where to begin. I downloaded a video converter called Mac X Free DVD but was unable to follow the instructions. I would appreciate any instruction that anyone might be able to provide.

Try mpeg streamclip, open the dvd folder and convert to mov/quicktime or mp4.
Or maybe use handbrake, open dvd folder/video_ts folder, convert to mp4, use high profile, import the mp4 in imovie. -

I'm afraid I don't know what a VIDEO_TS folder is either or how to open it. I'm a total novice to all of this. Thanks for any help

After you clicked import/open select the DVD and choose the video_ts folder?
