LG Blu-Ray players have good support for SRT subtitles. Find a model that you like and download the manual from LG's webpage for that model. The manual will usually have a chart with information about the type of media files that can be played, and the associated subtiltes.

Your sony supports srt subs, the thing is you have to merge the subs,no converting or re-encoding needed.

I use mkvmerge to add srt subs,it outputs mkv files which can be xvid or h264 which your sony will work with. You can turn off the subs anytime you want.

In mkvmerge you need to add a few command lines since they updated it so on older players it has that issue, the command lines you need to add are
    --engage no_cue_relative_position --engage no_cue_duration --disable-track-statistics-tags

Just paste them in mkvmerge/muxing/add command line options. Then check the box where it says Save as default for new jobs.

You can do this for other files that have this issue.Just remux them.

The only thing is with a new blu-ray player and movie you want to backup that has cinavia will cause you lots of grief, with my sony bdp-s380 it has no cinavia firmware installed on it since i didn't update it to the latest version which has it plus it plays all my backups with no problems.

I had the same subtitle issue you had until i found i had to mux the srt into files, also had to do the command line with mkvmerge since it had no rw/ff and freezing, plus when i burn my mkvs i make sure i add a separate srt along with the muxed srt in case my next blu-ray player only reads separate srts.
